
No. 1 UCLA Survives a Scare at No. 7 Long Beach State, 8-6

LONG BEACH, Calif.ย --ย The top-ranked UCLA Bruins improved to 11-0 on the year with an 8-6 double overtime victory at No. 7 Long Beach Stateย (6-1) on Saturday nightย at Lindgren Aquatics Center. The victoryย marked UCLA's 44th-straight,ย which extends the second-longest winning streak in school history. The all-time record is 50, which was established from 1964-68. UCLA improved toย 99-21-1 all-time against Long Beach State.
Senior Chancellor Ramirez and junior Alex Roelse led the Bruins with two goals each. Seniors Ryder Roberts and Patrick Fellner scored the only goals of the OT periods to secure the win over Long Beach State.ย Junior Aleksandar Ruzic played the entire gameย in the cage for the Bruins, shattering his career-high with 17ย saves for UCLA. His previous high was eight, equalled three times in his career.
Junior Max Irving got the Bruins on the board first with a cross-cage shot (7:32). ย Roelse put the Bruins up 2-0 with a power play goal (6:13). After Long Beach State's Nolan McConnell scored on a penalty shot (5:01), McConnell then tied it at 2-2 with a power play goal (3:14) that ended the scoring in the first quarter.ย
Ramirez scored the first goal of the second period on a counter with 2:46 left to give UCLA a 3-2 lead. McConnell then completed a hat trick with a power play goal to tie it at 3-3 (1:08), which would hold up as the halftime score.
Senior Gordon Marshall gave the Bruins a 4-3 lead with a power play goal to open the scoring in the third (7:16). Then Roelse scored his second of the game on a nice drive and finish to put UCLA up 5-3 (1:44) at the end of the third.
Ramirez scored his second goal on a 5-on-4 opportunity to put UCLA up 6-3 (5:54). But the 49ers reeled off three straight power play goals to tie the game at 6-6, sending it into overtime. The last exclusion goal by Stevenson came with just 0:08 remaining and scored off of the back of Ruzic's head after hitting the crossbar.
Roberts came up big in the first overtime period, scoring the only goal to put UCLA up 7-6 (0:41). Fellner scored the insurance goal on a counter to end the scoring atย 8-6 at the 2:05 mark of the second overtime period.
The Bruins return to action on Friday,ย Sept. 23 at 1:00 p.m. when they face Pomona-Pitzer in the first game of the Mountain Pacific Invitational (formerly known as the NorCal Invitational). California is hosting this year. The Bruins' first game will be at Northgate High School.
