
Bruins Finish Fourth at SMU Classic

LEWISVILLE, Texas -- No. 21 UCLA registered a fourth-place finish at the SMU Classic Saturday, which wrapped after two days at the Westside Aquatic Center. Seniors Katie Grover and Ciara Monahan posted third-place results in the 100 Fly and 3-Meter Dive, respectively. USC came out victorious in the overall standings, edging out Louisville by just one half point.
It was a fight to the finish in the opening event of the day, with the Bruins in the thick of the 200 Medley Relay. Emma Schanz, Sarah Kaunitz, Grover and Isabella Goldsmith teamed up to clock in at 1:41.75, good for fourth and just over three seconds behind the winners from Louisville.
Schanz notched three B-cut finishes on the day, giving the Colville, Wash. native five on the trip. Her first Saturday came in the 200 Back, where Schanz checked in at 1:56.18 to finish fifth in the A Final. Freshman Jennifer Lathrop added one of her own in the B Final with a time of 1:57.76. Schanz's second of the day came in the 200 IM, as her B-Final time of 1:58.24 was good for second in the race.
Sophomore Kenisha Liu also impressed (2:15.46) in the 200 IM with a time of 2:02.35 in the A Final, following an earlier B-cut earning performance in the 200 Breast. Junior Sandra Soe finished fourth in the 500 Free with a time of 4:49.91 in the distance race to garner 11 points. Sophomore Isabella Goldsmith swam in the 100 Free, where her time of 51.07 placed the Las Vegas, Nev. native in sixth place.
For the second consecutive day, Monahan completed the evening's diving event with a spot in the Top 3—in this case, the 3-Meter competition. Her score of 256.50 edged out the nearest competitor by 0.55 point.
Friday, Grover impressed with a third-place finish in the 100 Fly. Saturday was more of the same, as her 200 Fly time of 1:57.10 went for another third-place mark to cap her successful weekend. Amy Okada picked up a B-standard time of 1:59.25 in the B Final.
