IRVINE, Calif. โ The No. 3 UCLA women's water polo team defeated No. 16 UC San Diego, 19-3, in the first round of play at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational Friday. With the win, the Bruins advance to face the winner of the UC Irvine-San Diego State contest, to be decided later Friday.
Lizette Rozeboom led the way for the Bruins with four goals, while Rachel Fattal added three. Alys Williams and Bronte Halligan each added two for UCLA (9-0).
Fattal opened scoring just 13 seconds into the contest. Soon thereafter, Halligan added her first and Williams added another to put the Bruin lead at 3-0 just 2:15 into the game. Lauren Boyer got the Tritons on the board at 3-1, but UCSD (4-6) would not get any closer, as Bruins Maddie Musselman, Kodi Hill and Aubrie Monahan all netted goals to end the opening frame.
Halligan scored her second goal of the game and sixth of the season to open scoring in the second, and Fattal completed her three-goal day with two scores less than a minute apart to push the Bruin lead to 9-1. Williams added her second of the game and 19th of the season before Rozeboom began her flurry of scores to put the Bruin halftime lead at 11-1.
Rozeboom carried the momentum from her first-half-ending goalย into the third quarter, where she opened scoring for the Bruins. Devin Grab then added her ninth of the season, and Sarah Sheldon followed with the second of her campaign. The Tritons Alexis Wieseler put an end to the 11-goal Bruin run, in what was otherwise a productive quarter for MPSF Player of the Week Carlee Kapana. The goalie recorded four saves in the frame and eight overall in her three quarters of play. Rozeboom added two more goals in the third to give her four for the game and a hat trick for the quarter, while Grace Reego scored her second of the season to push the Bruin lead to 17-2 to end the third.
Bruin Kelsey Blacker scored her first goal of the season midway through the fourth and Jenna Hurst added her third with under two minutes to go. Hannah Storum replaced Kapana in the cage, where she tallied two saves and surrendered a goal to the Tritons' Chanel Schilling in an extraman situation.
In No. 6 UC Irvine, UCLA would face a team that it defeated 16-1 just a week ago in the Bruins' home opener. No. 17 San Diego State, meanwhile, currently sits at 4-4. The Aztecs most recently defeated UCSD, 5-4, on Feb. 12.
