No. 2/3 UCLA Drops a Pair of Heartbreakers

The Bruins fell 3-2 to No. 4 Pepperdine and No. 1 USC at Zuma Beach on Saturday.

MALIBU, Calif., -- No. 2/3 UCLA (2-2) dropped a pair of 3-2 heartbreakers to top four programs on Saturday at Zuma Beach at the Pepperdine Kick-Off.
UCLA began the day against the hosts, No. 4 Pepperdine (1-1). The Bruins went up 1-0 with a straight-set victory on court four when Elise Zappia and Izzy Carey defeated Pepperdine's Anika Wilson and Deahna Kraft, 21-14, 21-16.
UCLA was up 2-0 after Megan McNamara and Nicole McNamara took down the Waves' Delaney Knudsen and Madalyn Roh in straight sets on court one, 21-14, 21-16.
Pepperdine started its comeback with a straight-set win on court two when Corinne Quiggle and Brittany Howard defeated the Bruins' pair of freshman Madi Yeomans and senior Kamila Tan, 21-15, 21-19.
The Waves then tied it at 2-2 with a three-set win on court five as Gigi Hernandez and Katty Workman defeated UCLA's freshman tandem of Chanti Holroyd and Lily Justine, 21-19, 17-21, 15-11.
Another three-set match followed with Pepperdine winning the match, 3-2, on court three when Skylar Caputo and Heidi Dyer defeated another UCLA freshman pair of Torrey Van Winden and Savvy Simo, 21-12, 18-21, 16-14.

UCLA concluded the day with a 3-2 loss to No. 1 USC (2-0). The Trojans went up 1-0 with a straight-set victory on court one when Kelly Claes and Sara Hughes defeated Megan McNamara and Nicole McNamara in straight sets, 21-18, 21-12.
USC went up 2-0 after a straight-set win on court three as Terese Cannon and Nicolette Martin defeated the Bruins' freshman pair of Savvy Simo and Torrey Van Winden, 21-16, 21-18.
UCLA got on the board to make it 2-1 on court four when Elise Zappia and Izzy Carey defeated the Trojans' Abril Bustamante and Joy Dennis in straight sets, 21-19, 21-15.
But the Trojans sealed the win on court five, going up 3-1, when Jenna Belton and Jo Kremer defeated the Bruins' freshman pair of Chanti Holroyd and Lily Justine in a three-set match, 21-18, 17-21, 15-11.
UCLA's duo of freshman Madi Yeomans and senior Kamila Tan provided the 3-2 final, defeating USC's Sophie Bukovec and Allie Wheeler in three sets, 16-21, 21-17, 15-11.
