TUCSON, Ariz. -- No. 2 UCLA (27-3) opened the 2017 Pac-12 Beach Volleyball Championships with a 4-1 win over No. 7 Washington (7-6) on Thursday morning at Bear Down Beach on the campus of Arizona. The Bruins will face No. 3 Arizona (16-8) at 5:00 p.m. later today in the quarterfinals live on the Pac-12 Network.
UCLA got the first point on the board on court four as senior Jordan Anderson and sophomore Izzy Carey defeated Washington's Melanie Wade and Shayne McPherson in straight sets, 21-10, 21-14. The Bruin duo improved to 18-1 on the year (17-1 on court four).
The Bruins went up 2-0 on court one as sophomores Megan McNamara and Nicole McNamara defeated UW's Crissy Jones and Tia Scambray in straight sets, 21-12, 24-22. The twins improved to 25-4 this season, all on court one.
Court three proved to be the deciding match as UCLA's tandem of junior Elise Zappia and freshman Torrey Van Winden defeated the Huskies' Cassie Strickland and Carly DeHoog, 21-18, 21-17. The Bruin pair improved to 17-2 on the year (16-2 on court three).
Washington claimed its first point on court two as Courtney Schwan and Destiny Julye defeated UCLA's duo of freshman Madi Yeomans and senior Kamila Tan in three sets, 21-14, 19-21, 15-8. The UCLA duo dropped to 19-10 on the year (18-10 on court two).
The Bruins won the final point on court five as freshmen Lily Justine and Savvy Simo beat UW's Avie Niece and Cailin Onosko in three sets, 23-21, 15-21, 15-8. The Bruin tandem improved to 3-1 on the year, all on court five.
