No. 4 UCLA Opens 2017 with Two Wins

The Bruins defeated No. 19 Pomona-Pitzer (16-5) and Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (19-2).

Freshman Quinten Osborne led the Bruins with three goals while redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Alex Wolf registered one save in the first half while allowing two scores and sophomore Jonathan Van De Veldeย tallied seven saves while surrendering three scores in the second half.
Mark Hallmanย gave the Sagehens their only lead of the game with a power play strike (7:06) to make it 1-0. Freshman Luke Henrikssonย tied the game at 1-1 with a power play goal of his own (6:43) on the Bruins' next possession. That started a stretch of nine unanswered goals for UCLA. Senior Matt Farmer gave the Bruins a 2-1 lead with a goal at set (5:57) and freshman Nicolas Saveljic extended the lead to 3-1 with a 6-on-5 score (4:50). Another power play goal for the Bruins followed when junior Warren Snyder found the back of the cage (2:58) and senior Alex Roelseย would add a score from the front court (0:32) to give the Bruins a 5-1 lead after one period.
Freshman Evan Rosenfeldย opened the scoring in the second period with a goal from two meters (7:31) and junior David Stilingย would score on a nice drive (6:01) to make it 7-1. UCLA then pushed the lead to 9-1 with back-to-back exclusion goals. The first was by freshman Chasen Travisano (4:06) and the second by Osborne (1:23). After a power play goal by Pomona-Pitzer'sย Joseph Schafer (0:47) made it 9-2, Osborne netted his second of the game from two meters (0:35) to give the Bruins a 10-2 lead at the break.
Sophomore Eric Goldenbergย opened the third with a power play goal (6:36) to give UCLA an 11-2 advantage. But the Sagehensย scored two in a row to cut the deficit to 11-4. The Bruins regrouped and scored the last four goals of the period to take a 15-4 lead into the fourth. Sophomore James Vlachonassiosย scored from the front court (4:21) and then Osborne completed his hat trick with a goal at set (3:30) to make it 13-4. Travisanoย scored his second of the game on a strike from the front court (2:04) and Sophomore Raphael Raede added a power play goal (0:19) to push the lead to 15-4.
In a low-scoring quarter, Riley Manganย scored a goal at two meters (5:10) to cut the Bruins' lead to 15-5. Junior Kent Inoue scored on a 6-on-5 opportunity to provide the 16-5 final.

The fourth-ranked UCLA Bruins (2-0) defeated Claremon-Mudd-Scripps (0-2) 19-2 in the final game of the UCLA Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Dirks Pool at Spiekerย Aquatics Center.
Freshman Nicolas Saveljicย led the Bruins with three goals while redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Alex Wolf registered two saves in the first half while allowing two scores and sophomore Jonathan Van De Veldeย tallied five saves while pitching a shutout in the second half.
Saveljicย got the Bruins on the board first and fast (7:45) with a power play goal. Zach Rossmanย tied the game at 1-1 with a power play goal for the Stags with 6:55 left in the opening period. But the Bruins would score eight goals in a row to build a commanding lead. The run began with a goal from the front court by senior Jack Grover (6:33). Saveljic scored his second (5:39) from two meters on a one-timer from a nice feed from senior Max Irving to make it 3-1. Then senior Jesse Camouย added a counter attack goal (4:04) and senior James Robinson netted a power play goal (2:37) to push the lead to 5-1. Freshman Luke Henrikssonย scored on a counter (2:22) and junior Austin Rone scored from the front court (0:28) to end the scoring in the first with UCLA leading 7-1.
Grover added his second of the game to open the scoring in the second with an exclusion goal (6:56). After a counter score from junior Warren Snyder (6:14) pushed the lead to 9-1, the Stags snapped the scoring streak with a power play goal by Peter Hilton (5:35). But UCLA would score five more goals in the period to build a 14-2 lead at the half. Freshman Quintenย Osborne scored on a 6-on-5 opportunity (5:05) and then three straight counter attack scores would follow. Roneย scored his second of the game (3:32), Camou netted his second (3:00) and senior Alex Roelseย registered his first (2:20). Roelseย would end the scoring in the second with a power play goal (1:05) to make it 14-2.
The Bruins pitched a shutout in the third, but managed only one goal. Sophomore Raphael Raedeย added his first of the game (4:37) with a goal from two meters to give the Bruins a 15-2 lead through three periods.
Another shutout period followed for the Bruins in the fourth. Saveljic completed his hat trick to open the scoring in the final stanza (6:04) with a goal from the front court. Sophomore James Vlachonassiosย pushed the lead to 17-2 with his first goal of the game (2:16) and then junior Kent Inoue made it 18-2 with an exclusion goal (1:14). Raedeย scored his second of the game at two meters (0:27) to provide the 19-2 final.
UCLA returns to action on Friday, Sept. 8 vs. George Washington at 11:30 a.m. PT in the Bruins' first game of the Princeton Invitational.
