No. 4 UCLA Defeats No. 5 Pacific, 9-8

Three Bruins scored two goals each and the UCLA power play defense was stellar in victory.

Seniors Matt Farmer and Alex Roelse and freshman Evan Rosenfeld led the Bruins in scoring with two goals apiece. Redshirt sophomore Alex Wolf played the entire game in goal, registering 11 saves, one steal and one assist while surrendering eight goals.
Luke Pavillardย got the Tigers on the board first with a score from the front court (7:31). Senior Max Irving netted the equalizer just 21 seconds later (7:10) with a goal at even strength. Senior Alex Roelseย ended the scoring in the first period with a power play goal (4:39) that put the Bruins out in front, 2-1.
The second quarter was all Pacific as the Bruins were held scoreless. Kale Ai tied the game at 2-2 with a goal at full strength (6:23) and then Luis Araya put the Tigers out in front, 3-2, with a goal from the front court (4:53) that ended the scoring in the second quarter.ย
The Bruins drew an exclusion just before the half and Nicolas Saveljic won the opening sprint in the third quarter, setting up the Bruins with a 6-on-5 opportunity to start the period. Junior Austin Roneย delivered a game-tying power play goal at the 7:48 mark. Roelseย then added his second of the game (4:42) to put the Bruins back in front, 4-3. But Pavillardย answered (3:44) with his second of the game to knot the score at 4-4. Freshman Chasen Travisano set upย Saveljicย (3:20) to give UCLA a 5-4 lead. Ben Stevenson tied the game at 5-5 for Pacific with a goal at even strength (1:13). UCLA freshman Evan Rosenfeldย pushed the Bruins back in front at the end of three quarters with a goal from the front court (0:08).
Pavillard opened the final period with a hat trick for Pacific (7:18), tying the game at 6-6. Rosenfeldย then put the Bruins back in front, 7-6, with his second goal of the game (6:04). Farmer gave the Bruins the first two-goal lead of the game with a score from two meters (1:37) that put UCLA ahead 8-6. But Pacific's Engin Ege Colakย scored an exclusion goal (1:08) to trim the lead to 8-7. Farmer would strike again from set, pushing the lead to 9-7 with 48 seconds to go. But just seven seconds later, Pavillardย scored his fourth of the game (0:41) to cut it to 9-8. After the Bruins ran out the shot clock, Wolf stopped a shot by Devon Thumwoodย from the front court in the final seconds to preserve the 9-8 victory.
The Bruins return to action later today with a semifinal game of the Mountain Pacific Invitational vs. No. 1 California at 3:15 p.m. PT. The Golden Bears took out Pepperdine, 12-10, in their quarterfinal game.
