UCLA Drops 67-65 Heartbreaker to Indiana
December 02, 2018 | Women's Basketball
LOS ANGELES โ The UCLA women's basketball team suffered another tight contest on Sunday, falling to unbeaten Indiana by a count final of 67-65 at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom.
ย
UCLA (3-5) led by as many as 10 early on but saw Indiana (7-0) use a 20-3 run to close the first half.
ย
Senior Kennedy Burke scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds en route to becoming the fourth Bruin in women's basketball history with 1,000+ points, 500+ rebounds and 100+ blocks.
ย
In 34 minutes, senior Japreece Dean tallied a team-high 16 points, while sophomore Michaela Onyenwere collected her second double-double of the year with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
ย
The Storyline
It was a game of runs for both teams in the first half. UCLA's swarming defense included three blocks in the first two minutes, helping the Bruins take an early 9-3 lead. Burke scored seven of UCLA's first 13 points, but Indiana responded with an 8-0 run to knot the affair at 17 apiece.
ย
The Bruins mustered a 10-0 run to extend their lead to double digits. Burke continued her offensive tear in the second quarter, capping a three-point play to move into double figures and make it 27-17 Bruins. Over the next six minutes, however, Indiana fired back with a 20-3 run to go up seven (37-30), forcing UCLA to go scoreless in the final 5:56 of the first half.
ย
Sophomore Chantel Horvat, who made her first appearance of the 2018-19 season, opened the fourth quarter with a strong take to the rim to trim the gap to three (53-50). A block by senior Lajahna Drummer translated to a layup on the other end for Burke, and then Dean buried a jumper on the inbounds play to make it 54-53 UCLA, giving the Bruins their first lead of the second half.
ย
In crunch time, redshirt freshman Lindsey Corsaro drilled a clutch three-pointer to put UCLA up 62-60 with 2:31 left, however, Indiana responded with a bucket to tie it.
ย
Onyenwere hauled in one of her six offensive rebounds and scored a put-back to put the lead back in the hands of the Bruins, but once again, the Hoosiers had an answer, as Jaelynn Penn connected on a corner trey to put Indiana up one (65-64) with 29 seconds remaining.
ย
Indiana gave UCLA chances, as the Hoosiers missed two of four free throws in the final 13 seconds, but the Bruins fell just short of the comeback.
