Bruins Take First Two at Triton Invite

February 10, 2018 | Women's Water Polo

SAN DIEGO โ€“ The No. 4 UCLA women's water polo team won its first two games at the Triton Invitational Friday, defeating Iona, 12-1, and No. 15 UC San Diego, 10-2. The Bruins will return to action Sunday for a semifinal game against the winner of No. 6 Arizona State and No. 10 UC Davis. That game will begin at 12:30 p.m.

Louise Hazell, Brooke Maxson and Lizette Rozeboom each scored three goals across the Bruins' (11-0) two games at the Triton Poolย Saturday. Hannah Storum was in goal for both contests, surrendering just the three goals while racking up 22 savesโ€”15 against host UCSD.

Devin Grab scored the first of four first-quarter goals in UCLA's morning game against Iona (2-6). Maxson, Lexi Liebowitz and Bronte Halligan followed suit to quickly put the Gaels in the rearview mirror. Nicole Reynolds and Lizette Rozeboom each added a goal under the two-minute mark of the second to send the game to the half with the Bruins leading, 6-0.

Alexis Angermund scored just 28 seconds into the third stanza, while freshmen Liebowitz (her second) and Wheaton upped the Bruin advantage to 9-0. Iona got on the board in the third, but Maxson found the back of the net for her second of the morning to answer. Heading into the fourth with a 10-1 lead, Hazell and Sarah Sheldon tacked on two more goals to make it an even dozen, which would prove more than enough with Storum in goal.

The Bruins' second game of the day was nearly a mirror image of the first, as UCLA scored four first-quarter goals to take a 4-0 advantage over UCSD (5-6) after eight minutes of play. Grace Reego, Rozeboom, Maddie Musselman and Maxson would account for the scores. Reynolds, Hazell and Musselman each posted one in the second frame to increase the lead to 7-0 over the home Tritons. Musselman's second of the day raised her team-leading total to 18 on the season.

Rozeboom's second of the afternoon contest made it 8-0, before the Tritons finally broke through against Storum for their first as the third quarter neared completion. UCSD would add one more in the fourth, but not before Hazell and Sheldon each posted another for the Bruins.
