Bruins Cap Outdoor Opener with Top-5 Finishes

San Diego, Calif โ€“ The UCLA track and field team is officially off the blocks in the outdoor season, finishing the Aztec Invite with a pair of victories and ten Top-5 performances on the day.

Junior CJ Alumbres had a big day at the triple jump pit, taking home the event victory with a leap of 15.40m (50-06.25), his first ever jump over 50 feet. Junior Lillianna Hebert was seventh in the women's competition with a mark of 11.37m (37-03.75).

Sophomore Mikella Lefebvre-Oatis started her outdoor campaign off strong with a clearance of 1.71m in the high jump, good for a tie for the event victory. Hebert and senior Kaelin Davis tied for third place, both posting jumps of 1.66m (5-05.25).

Freshman Ilaria Casarotto made her UCLA debut in the javelin Saturday, finishing second overall with a throw of 46.84m (153-08). The men's competition saw sophomore Connor Deverian (57.48m, 188-07) and junior AK Turner (55.26m, 181-03) finish seventh and 11th, respectively.

Senior Jelvon Butler was the runner-up in the women's 200m, crossing the line with a lifetime-best time of 23.79. Junior Schuyler Moore finished in ninth place with a time of 24.14. Sophomore Darius Smith was 25th in the men's competition, finishing at 22.45.

Freshman Alyssa Wilson led the way for the Bruins in the discus, taking third overall with a throw of 53.90m (176-10). Junior Ashlie Blake took seventh at 47.74m (156-07), while junior Lana Frazier finished 20th overall (37.47m, 122-11).

In the shot put, Blake took third with a throw of 16.61m (54-06.00). Junior Kai Wong was ninth in the men's competition.

Freshman Matthew DeRoos finished sixth overall in the long jump, posting a wind-aided jump of 7.25m (23-09.50). Senior Idrees Bernard (6.91w, 22-08.00) was 11th, and Alumbres (6.83m, 22-05.00) placed 13th.

The men's pole vault saw junior Michael Fancey tie for second place with a clearance of 4.71m (15-05.50).

In UCLA's first relay of the 2018 outdoor season, the women's 4x100m team (Pattriana Perry, Butler, Moore, and Ashley Lewis) took third overall with a time of 46.70.

The women's 100m saw Lewis finish 15th overall with a time of 12.11, while junior Dominique Beltrez was 30th at 12.95. Smith led the way for the Bruin men, crossing the line with a time of 10.89, good for 17th place. Bernard finished in 32nd (11.20).

In the 100m hurdles, Perry clocked a time of 14.52 to finish 11th overall. Beltrez was 22nd with a time of 15.53.

Freshmen Jacquelyn Hill and Paige Carter went 15-16 in the 400m, finishing with times of 1:01.50 and 1:01.59, respectively. Carter also finished 18th in the 800m with a time of 2:18.81. Sophomore Tyler Janes was 11th in the men's 800m with at 1:54.95.

The Bruins will be back in action for their first home competitions of the season next week, as Drake Stadium will play host to the Bob Larsen Distance Carnival (Friday, Mar. 30) and the Jim Bush Legends Invitational (Saturday, Mar. 31).
