TORRANCE, Calif. โ A pair of UCLA distance runners recorded 2018-firsts on the opening day of the Mt. SAC Relays at El Camino College's Murdock Stadium.
Junior Cole Smith was the first Bruin to compete on Thursday, recording his first career sub-9:00 performance in the 3000m steeplechase, finishing with a time of 8:58.58 which set a new outside-best by a Bruin in that event this year. His time was good for a ninth-place finish overall and fourth in his heat.
Participating in the 10000m for the first time this season and just the third time in her collegiate career, sophomore Jackie Garner recorded a mark of 35:17.52. ย
The Bruins will be back in action in the Mt. SAC Relays on Friday, when the majority of collegiate events will take place. In addition, the bulk of UCLA's track and field squad will take part in the John Jacobs Invitational, hosted by Oklahoma, on Friday and Saturday.
