STANFORD, Calif.ย -- No. 1 UCLA won its 22ndย consecutive dualย on Saturday afternoon with a 5-0 win over No. 20 Saint Mary'sย (12-8) in the first match of the Stanford West Coast Classic at Stanford's Beach Volleyball Stadium.
The Bruins, who improved to 27-3 on the season face No. 5 Cal Poly (19-3) later this afternoon at Stanford's Beach Volleyball Stadium.
The Bruins opened the day by winning both matches of the first flight on courts five and six. In exhibition play, sophomore Chanti Holroyd and freshman Jamie McQuarrieย defeated SMC's Madi Wilkerson and Sienna Young in straight sets, 21-14, 21-19 on court six. Then junior Izzy Carey and freshman Megan Muretย put the Bruins up 1-0 with an easy 21-9, 21-11 win over the Gaels' Morgan Kendrick and Jennifer Laird on court five for their 22nd straight victory.
UCLA sealed the match in the second flight on courts three and four. On court four, freshman Mac May and senior Elise Zappiaย had little trouble with Lindsey Calvin and Kelseyย Knudsen, posting a 21-14, 21-11ย win to put UCLA up 2-0. The Bruins sealed the dual win on court three in two hard-fought sets as junior Zana Muno and sophomore Savvy Simo defeated SMC's Sarah Chase and Mary Hernandez, 22-20, 25-23.
The Bruins completed the 5-0 sweep in the third flight on courts one and two as juniorย Sarah Sponcil and sophomore Lily Justine won in straight sets over Emily Bible and Lindsey Knudsen, 21-15, 21-12 on court two. Then juniors Megan McNamara and Nicole McNamara easily dispatched of Morgan Hughes and Payton Rund, 21-14, 21-9.
