May 12, 2018 | Men's Tennis
LOS ANGELES โ Morning rain delayed the second-seeded UCLA men's tennis team's start to the NCAA Championships Saturday, but the Bruins ultimately cruised to a 4-0 win over visiting Idaho. The victory set up an all-Southern California Second-Round match, as UCLA will face San Diego Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Bruins (27-2) did not drop a single set in its completed matches Saturday, with freshman Keegan Smith notching the ever-important third and clinching singles win.
UCLA's two NCAA Championships-bound duos came up big in doubles play to get the Bruins off on the right foot. The 16th-ranked pair of Austin Rapp and Keegan Smith made its presence felt with a 6-2 victory over Esteban Santibanez and Lucas Coutinho on court two, giving the Bruins their first win of the day. No. 29 Martin Redlicki-Evan Zhu followed suit on the top court, winning its sixth consecutive match to clinch. The pair defeated the Idaho (15-8) tandem of Mark Kovacs-Carlos Longhi Neto, 6-3. Each Bruin pair used an ace to collect its final point.
