Sophomore Felix Brozyna-Vilim led the Bruins with a career-high four goals in the win over Fresno Pacific.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. --ย No. 1 UCLA opened the 2018 season with a 17-7 win over Fresno Pacific (0-1) in the first game of the UCLA Invitational on Saturday morning at Dirks Pool at Spiekerย Aquatics Center.

Sophomore Felix Brozyna-Vilim led 12 different Bruins in scoring with fourย goals while redshirtย junior Jonathan Van De Velde got the start in the cage for the Bruins and had seven saves in the first half while allowing two goals. Freshman Danny Roland played the entire second half in goal, registering six saves while surrendering five goals.

The Bruins jumped out to a 5-0 start in the first period. Sophomore Luke Henrikssonย scored the first goal of the 2018 season on a penalty shot (5:25). Brozyna-Vilimย then scored back-to-back goals (4:54 and 4:00) to put UCLA up 3-0. Senior Austin Roneย (2:25) and sophomore Quinten Osborne (1:31) ended the scoring in the first period.

UCLA built an 11-2 lead by halftime with second period goals by redshirt freshman Bailey Jarvis (7:05), sophomore Chasen Travisanoย (6:30), sophomore Evan Rosenfeldย (4:16). two more goals from Brozyna-Vilim (2:59 and 1:16) and another goal at two meters by Osborne (0:34). The Bruins scored the first 10 goals of the game before Taylor Heckathornย scored a power play goal for the Sunbirds.

In the third period, the two teams traded goals, with senior Kent Inoue (3:52) and redshirtย junior Eric Goldenbergย (3:08) scoring their first goals of the game and redshirtย sophomore Peter Lovasย (2:40) scoring the first of his career. UCLA entered the fourth quarter with a 14-5 lead.

The alternating scoring trend continued in the final stanza with UCLA scoring three goals and the Sunbirdsย netting two. A pair of Bruin freshmen picked up their first collegiate goals as Matthew Kacuraย (5:38) scored from two meters and Michael Granerย (2:27) scored from the front court. Inoue netted his second of the game from two meters with 1:15 remaining as UCLA won the game, 17-7.
