BERKELEY, Calif. --ย No. 3 UCLA improved to 6-0 on the year with a 13-8 win over No. 13 UC Davis (2-2) in the first game of the Cal Cup at Spiekerย Aquatics Complex at California on Saturday morning.

In the win over the Aggies, the Bruins were led by junior Maddie Musselmanย who tied her career high of five goals for the fourth time in her collegiate career. Senior Carlee Kapanaย got the start in the cage and registered 10 saves while allowing seven goals in three quarters of work. Sophomore Jahmea Bent came on in relief in the fourth period and tallied four saves while allowing one penalty shot conversion and stopping two others.

The Bruins led 3-2 at the end of the first period. UCLA trailed 2-0 after a goal by Devin Holcomb at the 2:50 mark of the first quarter. Freshman Val Ayala got the Bruins on the board with a penalty shot conversion (2:34) and then junior Emily Skellyย followed with a penalty score (0:37) to tie the game at 2-2. Senior Rachel Whiteleggeย gave the Bruins their first lead of the game on a counter attack with four seconds remaining in the opening period.

The Aggies tied the game at 3-3 with a counter attack goal to open the scoring in the second period (7:37). Musselmanย responded for UCLA with a strike from the front court (7:16) and then junior Brooke Maxson added a goal on a counter attack (4:27) to push the lead to 5-3. UC Davis tied the score at 5-5 with back-to-back goals (3:44 and 2:19) before the Bruins ended the half with three unanswered scores, which began with a power play goal from Musselmanย (2:01). Ayala netted her second of the game on a counter (1:28) and freshman Ava Johnson found the back of the net (0:40) from two meters to give the Bruins an 8-5 lead at the break.

The Aggies trimmed the lead to 8-6 with a goal at set (6:49) to open the scoring in the third. But the Bruins answered with three consecutive scores to push the lead to 11-6. All three goals came from Musselmanย as she scored from the front court (6:22), on a power play (5:53) and on a counter attack (3:26). Chloe Robinson converted a penalty shot for the Aggies (1:35) and Skellyย added her second of the game on a 6-on-5 opportunity for the Bruins (0:59) to end the scoring in the third with UCLA leading 12-7.

Each team only scored one goal in the fourth with the Aggies picking up another penalty score (4:37) and the Bruins netting one from two meters by senior Sarah Sheldon (3:19) to provide the 13-8 final.

After an exhibition game to end the day against No. 2 Stanford at 1:00 p.m. today, the Bruins open tomorrow with an exhibition game at No. 4 California at 8:30 a.m. and conclude Cal Cup play against No. 17 Fresno State at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday.
