No. 2 UCLA Posts A Pair of Victories on Saturday

LOS ANGELES -- No. 2 UCLA (14-1) won two non-conference games in a double-header on Saturday at Spieker Aquatics Center, defeating No. 20 California Baptist University, 12-6, in the first game and edging out Whittier, 10-8, in the second contest. With the victories, the Bruins improved to 10-0 all-time against CBU and 7-0 versus Whittier.

In the first game, junior Felix Brozyna-Vilim led all scorers with four goals as eight different Bruins scored. Redshirt senior Alex Wolf got the start in the cage and played the first half, recording five saves while allowing four goals. Freshman Bernardo Maurizi came on in relief in the second half and registered seven stops while surrendering just two scores.

UCLA led the Lancers 3-1 at the end of the first period. Brozyna-Vilim got things started with a goal at two meters (4:54) and redshirt freshman Will Morgan scoring from the front court (2:38) to put the Bruins up 2-0. Sophomore Ashworth Molthen converted a penalty shot (2:04) to make it 3-0, but CBU got on the board with a goal from Jacob Olsen (0:48) to end the scoring in the period.

The Bruins came out in the second quarter scoring the first three goals again to build a 6-1 advantage. Sophomore Jake Cavano (7:37) and junior Chasen Travisano (6:51) scored their first goals of the game from the front court and then Brozyna-Vilim netted his second from two meters (3:49). UCLA would get power play goals from sophomore Matthew Kacura (2:48) and freshman Andy Rodgers (0:37) to help the Bruins lead 8-4 at halftime.

The third period belonged to the UCLA centers as freshman Gabe Discipulo (6:33) scored at set and then Brozyna-Vilim tallied two more goals from two meters (2:13 and 0:29) to help the Bruins build an 11-6 lead heading into the final period.

The fourth quarter only saw one goal with the Bruins pitching a shutout. Rodgers scored his second of the game on a power play (5:28) to provide the 12-6 final.

In the second game, juniors Felix Brozyna-Vilim and Nicolas Saveljic each scored two goals in two quarters of action as eight different Bruins scored. Redshirt senior Alex Wolf got the start in the cage and played the entire game, recording 10 saves while allowing eight goals.

UCLA led the Poets 2-0 at the end of the first period. Brozyna-Vilim scored both goals of the opening quarter (7:43 and 2:02) from two meters.

The Bruins won the second quarter, 4-2. Freshmen Max Berg (5:10) and Gabe Discipulo (2:54) scored the first two goals of the period to extend the lead to 4-0. After a goal by Whittier, junior Nicolas Saveljic sandwiched two scores between another goal by the Poets (2:24 and 0:12, power play) to give UCLA a 6-2 lead at the break.

The Poets won the second half, beginning with a 2-1 score in the third period. After the Poets closed the gap to 6-4, freshman Tommy Gruwell scored from the front court (1:15) to give the Bruins 7-4 lead heading into the fourth.

Whittier outscored UCLA 4-3 in the final stanza. The Bruins looked like they were going to run away with the game after redshirt freshman Henry Wilde scored from the front court (7:34) on the first possession of the fourth period and sophomore Matthew Kacura converting a penalty shot (5:47) to extend the lead to 9-4. Redshirt freshman Ryan Sawyer's front-court strike (4:13) put the Bruins up 10-5, but the Poets scored the final three goals of the game to provide the 10-8 final.

The Bruins return to action next week when they travel to UC Irvine for a 1:00 p.m. PT tilt on Sunday, Oct. 27.
