The Bruins were led by freshman Tommy Gruwell, who had a hat trick and added one steal. Redshirt senior Alex Wolf played the entire game in the cage, registering 12 saves while allowing seven goals.
The two teams traded punches for the first 12 minutes of the game with each team scoring four goals. UCLA opened the scoring with a goal from the front court at even strength by sophomore Matthew Kacura (6:35). But LBSU'sย Garrett Zaanย caught a lucky break when the Bruins looked to have knocked a shot down but instead it turned into an off-speed lob shot over the hands of Wolf (5:35) to tie the game at 1-1. Junior Nicolas Saveljic scored his first goal of the game on a nice lob shot after an ordinary foul (1:02) to give UCLA a 2-1 lead. But the 49ers tied it up with a power play goal by Nemanja Bakicย (0:46) to end the scoring in the first period.
ย
UCLA, which never trailed, scored the first goal of the second period when sophomore Jake Cavano found the back of the net from the front court (5:34) to lead 3-2. LBSU would knot it up at 3-3 with a power play goal by Matt Morris (4:56). The Bruins answered with a power play strike from Gruwell, his first of the game (4:23) to lead 4-3. But Austin Stewart tied it at 4-4 with a score from the front court (4:01). Gruwell netted his second (3:42) of the game to help UCLA regain the lead at 5-4 on a penalty conversion, the first of three straight penalty goals for the Bruins. Cavanoย followed with his second of the game (2:18) and Saveljic did the same (1:26) to end the scoring in the first half with UCLA leading 7-4 at the break.
ย
Defense was the name of the game in the third as both teams managed only one goal in the period. Freshman Gabe Discipuloย took a nice feed from sophomore Ashworth Molthenย and scored from two meters (6:16) to extend the lead to 8-4. LBSU scored the final goal of the third to trim the lead to 8-5 when Zaan scored his second goal of the game on a power play (0:52).
ย
The Bruins won the fourth period, 3-2. Stewart opened the scoring in the fourth with his second goal of the game from the front court (6:32) to cut the Bruins' lead to 8-6. But the Bruins scored back-to-back goals to put the game away. Gruwell completed his hat trick on a power play (6:00) and then Molthenย scored from the front court (5:30) to push the lead to 10-6. Molthen also had three assists and two steals on the night. LBSU's Rafael Real Vergaraย scored after an ordinary (1:57) to make it 10-7. But redshirt freshman Brock Petersen, playing in his first game as a Bruin, ended the scoring in the game with a goal from the front court off a nice assist from junior Felix Brozyna-Vilim (1:28) to provide the 11-7 final.
UCLA returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 5 at 2:30 p.m. PT when they host the alumni in the annual Eric Lindroth Alumni Game at Spieker Aquatics Center. The game is the fifth of nine straight home dates for UCLA.
