No. 3 UCLA Advances to MPSF Semifinals

BERKELEY, Calif. --ย No. 3 UCLA (17-3) advanced to the MPSF semifinals with a 27-4 victory over sixth-seeded Penn State Behrendย (6-14) on Friday afternoon at Spiekerย Aquatics Complex. With the win, the Bruins improved to 2-0 all-time against the Lions.

The Bruins were led by freshman Gabe Discipulo who scored a career-high five goals. Freshman Max Berg scored a career-high four goals while sophomore Jake Cavanoย added a season-high-tying four goals as well. Redshirt senior Alex Wolf played the first half in the cage and was relieved with 4:42 left in the third period after tallying 10 saves while allowing two goals. Freshman Bernardo Maurizi played the remainder of the third and all of the fourth, registering four stops while surrendering two goals.

UCLA scored the first seven goals of the game and cruised to victory. Seven different Bruins scored in the first period, led byย Discipulo, who scored two goals at set (4:09 and 2:18). The Bruins also received one goal each from junior Nicolas Saveljic (7:36), junior Chasen Travisano (6:57), Berg (5:51), junior Felix Brozyna-Vilim (5:05), sophomore Matthew Kacura (1:55), and Cavano (0:05) as UCLA lead 8-1 at the end of the first period.

The second period saw UCLA put up another six goals while pitching a shutout to build a 14-1 lead by halftime. Freshman Cameron Reagan (7:16) scored his first of the game while Kacura followed with his second (6:25). Junior Levon Gukasyanย netted his first goal of the season at the 5:08 mark to put UCLA up 11-1. Cavano then scored his second (3:33) of the game before senior James Vlachonassios scored his first of the season (1:06). Discipulo completed his hat trick (0:33) to put the Bruins up 14-1 at the break.

Travisano scored his second of the game on a penalty shot to open the scoring in the third period (7:45). Discipulo added his fourth of the contest at the 5:59 mark of the third. Penn State Behrend'sย Austin Hoff scored an even strength goal (3:55) to cut the Bruins lead to 16-2. UCLA then reeled off five more goals to end the third with a 21-2 advantage. Reagan netted his second of the game (4:25) followed by Cavano's third and fourth goals of the game (3:30 and 2:52). Gukasyan added his second of the game (2:02) and freshman Jack White scored his first of the contest (1:26) to end the scoring in the third period.

Freshman Andy Rodgers opened the scoring in the fourth period (6:44) followed by a second score from Berg (6:04) to put UCLA up 23-2. Discipuloย scored his fifth of the game (4:41) and then Berg completed his hat trick (3:02) after the Lions scored back-to-back goals to push the lead to 25-4. White then added his second of the game (2:13) and Berg scored his fourth of the contest (1:31) to provide the 27-4 final.

The Bruins return to action tomorrow in the second semifinal when they faceย second-seeded Stanford at 1:00 p.m. PT.
