No. 3 UCLA Advances to NCAA Semifinals

STANFORD, Calif. --ย No. 3 UCLA (24-6) advanced to the semifinals of the 2019 NCAA Women's Water Polo Championship with a 13-7 win over No. 6 Michigan (23-9)ย on Friday nightย at Stanford's Avery Aquatics Center.

Junior Maddie Musselmanย and senior Lizette Rozeboom led all scorers with four goals apiece against the Wolverines. Seniorย Carlee Kapanaย got the starting nod in the cage for UCLA and played all but the final 1:19 of the fourth quarter, registering 10 saves while allowing seven goals. Sophomore Jahmea Bent came on in relief and tallied one save without allowing a goal for the final 1:19 of the fourth.

Michigan opened the game with three scores from the front court in the first period. But the Bruins got a power play goal from Musselmanย (5:52) to tie the game at 1-1 and another power play goal from Rozeboom (2:10) that tied it at 2-2. Rozeboomย scored from the front court (1:21) to tie the game at 3-3 and then junior Bronte Halliganย gave the Bruins their first lead at 4-3 with a goal from the front court, ending the scoring in the opening period with 0:16 left.

The Bruins opened the scoring in the second period with the first three goals to extend the lead to 7-3. The scoring streak of five consecutive goals continued with a goal at two meters from senior Kelsey Blacker (7:33) and then Musselman scored her second on a counter attack (6:57) and completed her hat trick with a power play goal (5:37). After Michigan pulled to within 7-5, Halligan netted her second of the game on a power play (1:10) to end the scoring in the period, pushing the Bruins' lead to 8-5 at halftime.

The Wolverines closed the gap to two at the start of the third period, but Halligan completed her hat trick on another power play (5:38) to make it 9-6. After a penalty shot by Michigan trimmed UCLA's lead to 9-7 (5:26), the Bruins scored the final four goals of the game to provide the 13-7 final. Senior Rachel Whiteleggeย scored from two meters (0:48) to end the scoring in the third. Rozeboom scored her third of the game (7:28) from the front court in the fourth quarter. Then Musselman netted her fourth on a penalty shot (5:18) before Rozeboom scored her fourth on a power play (4:11) to end the scoring.

UCLA will face No. 2 Stanford tomorrow (May 11) at 5:00 p.m. PT in the semifinals at Stanford's Avery Aquaticย Center.
