No. 2 UCLA Rallies to Defeat No. 7 Hawai'i, 3-2

GULF SHORES, Ala.ย -- No. 2 UCLAย rallied to defeat No. 7 Hawai'i (26-10) in the opening round of the 2019 NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship onย Friday morning, 3-2, at Gulf Shores Public Beach.

The Bruins, who improved to 32-3 on the year, will face No. 3 Florida State, which took down No. 6 Cal Poly, 3-0,ย on Friday afternoon. The Bruins and the Seminoles will square off in the last dual of the day at 2:00 p.m. PT/4:00 p.m. CT later today on ESPNU and ESPN3.

The Bruins opened the dual with Hawai'i with a win on courtย five as senior Izzy Careyย and freshman Lindsey Sparks defeated UH's Norene Iosia and Sofia Russoย in straight sets, 21-16, 21-9. Sparks, playing in her first NCAA Tournament game, posted a double-double of 16 kills and 13 digs. Carey had 13 kills, seven digs, two aces and one block while hitting .706 for the match (13K, 1E, 17TA).

Hawai'i would tie it at 1-1 with a tight straigh-set win on court two as Ari Homayun and Julia Scoles defeated the Bruin duo of junior Lily Justine and senior Sarah Sponcil, 22-20, 21-19. Justine had a match-high 16 kills to go with five digs, three blocks and one ace while Sponcil tallied 11 digs, eight kills and one ace.

Hi'ilawe Huddleston and Kylin Loker then put UH up 2-1 with a three-set thriller over UCLA's sophomore Lea Monkhouse and junior Savvy Simo, 21-16, 12-21, 15-9. Monkhouse had a monster match with 27 kills and 20 digs and added one ace. Simo registered 11 kills, seven digs and three blocks.

The Bruins mounted their comeback on courts one and three. Freshman Abby Van Winkle and senior Zana Muno tied the dual at 2-2 with a three-set win on court three over UH's Morgan Martin and Pani Napoleon, 21-18, 19-21, 15-10. Van Winkle had 22 kills, eight digs and two blocks while Muno tallied 15 kills, 14 digs, and three service aces.

The dual came down to a third set on court one where seniors Megan McNamara and Nicole McNamara defeated UH's Emily Maglio and Amy Ozee, 20-22, 21-15, 20-18. Megan McNamara had 18 kills, seven digs, and four aces while Nicole McNamara registered 15 kills, four digs, and three aces.
