No. 8/9 UCLA Passes First Road Test of 2020

January 10, 2020 | Women's Basketball

SALT LAKE CITY  – No. 8/9 UCLA struggled offensively for the first 28 minutes of the game on Friday night at Utah's Jon M. Huntsman Center, trailing the Utes 42-41. But the Bruins caught fire in the final 12 minutes (six made three-pointers), outscoring Utah 43-12 to post an 84-54 win in its first road game of the 2020 Pac-12 season. The win helped UCLA improve to 16-3 all-time against the Utes, including 14-0 since Utah joined the Pac-12 Conference. UCLA, along with Oregon State (plays at Arizona tonight), is one of only two undefeated teams in the country.

Michaela Onyenwere paced the UCLA attack with a game-high 18 points and nine rebounds. Freshman Charisma Osborne tied her career high of 17 points for the third time this season (highest total in Pac-12 play) and added eight rebounds, two steals and two assists. Natalie Chou reached double figures for the first time in 11 outings with 14 points to go with her game-high four steals (Utah only had three combined as a team).

The first quarter was a tight affair for most of the period with Utah leading the Bruins 10-9 after a 3-pointer by Julie Brosseau at the 3:11 mark. But UCLA scored the final eight points of the quarter to lead 17-10 at the end of one. Onyenwere scored four of the eight points and Chantel Horvat and Chou each scored a bucket down the stretch.

Chou hit another jumper with 9:10 remaining in the second period to extend UCLA's lead to 21-10. The Utes cut the Bruins' lead to just four (23-19) on a layup by Ola Makurat with 6:36 to go in the second period. But Jaden Owens hit a 3-pointer (4:36) to push the lead to 26-19 at the 4:36 mark. The Bruins were able to push the lead to nine at the break (34-25) on a layup by Chou with two seconds remaining. It was her eighth point of the first half to lead all scorers.

Cold shooting continued to hinder UCLA's offense at the start of the third as the Bruins missed their first nine shots of the period and were held scoreless for the first five-plus minutes. Meanwhile, Utah scored the first 11 points of the quarter to take a 36-34 lead on a layup by Maurane Corbin (4:26). The Bruins didn't score a single point in the third quarter until Onyenwere connected with two points in the paint to tie the game at 36-36 (4:05). The Bruins regained the lead at the 1:31 mark when Onyenwere made a power move in the paint to give UCLA a 43-42 advantage. Then just like they did at the end of the first quarter, UCLA went on an 8-0 run at the end of the third quarter to lead 49-42 heading into the fourth. Onyenwere scored another four points in the run, which culminated in a steal and made jumper in the lane by Chou (0:06).

Osborne hit her third 3-pointer of the game (8:58) in the fourth quarter to extend the Bruins' scoring run to 13-0 (including the last eight points of the third). Onyenwere's turnaround jumper on the right wing pushed the run to 15-0 (8:01) before Utah's Brosseau hit a jumper (7:31) to end the scoring run by UCLA. Lindsey Corsaro answered immediately hitting a 3-pointer for the Bruins (7:10). Osborne hit her fourth trey of the game (5:53) and Corsaro followed with a jumper (5:27) to extend the Bruins' lead to 20 points (66-46). Osborne's fifth from long range came with 4:17 to go and then Chou (2:38) and Owens (1:46) followed with 3-pointers to extend the lead to 80-51. Kayla Owens completed a traditional three-point play (0:55) to push the lead past 30 points (83-51). When the dust had settled, the Bruins closed out the game on a 43-12 run over the final 12:12 of the contest.

The Bruins (15-0, 4-0 Pac-12) dominated the battle of turnovers, 19-9, which led to a 21-7 advantage in points off turnovers. The Bruins also outrebounded Utah, 40-37, including a 12-9 edge in offensive rebounds for a 13-8 lead in second-chance points.

The Utes (7-8, 0-4 Pac-12), had only one player reach double figures in scoring as Brosseau finished the game with 10 points. Utah shot 36.4 percent (20-for-55) from the field compared to 44.1 percent (30-for-68) for the Bruins. UCLA also outshot the Utes from three-point range (39.1-24.0 percent) and from the charity stripe (75.0-57.1 percent).

UCLA continues its three-game road swing on Sunday, Jan. 12 at 11:00 a.m. PT at Colorado on the Pac-12 Networks.
