UCLA Places Trio in 3M Finals at Bruin Diving Invite

LOS ANGELES โ Headlined by a fourth-place finish from junior Ruby Neave, UCLA had a trio of finalists in Saturday's 3-meter diving championship on the second day of the 2020 Bruin Diving Invitational at Spieker Aquatics Center.
After Neave, freshman Katie Shaheen was the ninth-place finisher with a combined score of 515.60 while junior Alice Yanovsky was 14th at 476.20. Neave ended the competition with a combined score of 613.25, one of just six divers to break the 600-point barrier.
"I think we're starting to understand the things that we've been working on, I think that some of that stuff is starting to show," said UCLA head diving coach Tom Stebbins. "There's a lot of positive, but there's a lot of things we need to address still, so we're going to evaluate that over the course of the next week or so and then really get to work on attacking that."
Neave and Shaheen both reached the finals after personal-best performances in the preliminary round. Neave posted a score of 322.65 in the prelims while Shaheen was at 286.30, both representing new collegiate-bests.
In addition, Shaheen's mark qualified her the NCAA Zone E Championships, where she will join Neave and Yanovsky who qualified earlier this season.ย
Freshman Hannah Butler was destined for a top-18 spot and a trip to the finals after recording a score of 234.70 over her first five dives of the preliminary round, but she dropped to No. 26 after being flagged for an incorrect dive on the sixth and final dive in her list. She had scored at least 40 points on each of her previous attempts, including a 55.50 on her fourth dive, a 5152B.
Stanford's Carolina Sculti (657.30) was the overall winner of the 3M competition, followed by Hawai'i's Daphne WIls (656.15) and Minnesota's Joy Zhu (626.60). Saturday's 3M competition had 49 entries.
The Bruin Diving Invitational concludes on Sunday with the women's platform and men's 1-meter championships. ย
