No. 2 UCLA Rallies to Defeat No. 13 UC San Diego, 8-6

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --ย No. 2 UCLA (2-1) bounced back after its first loss of the season to rally for an 8-6 win over No. 13 UC San Diego (0-1) on Saturday morning at the UCSB Winter Invitational at UCSB's Campus Pool. The Bruins improved to 31-3 all-time against the Tritons.
The Bruins were led by two goals from freshman Abbi Hill who scored the game-winning goal from the front court in the fourth quarter. Junior Jahmea Bent got the starting nod in the cage and tallied seven saves while allowing two goals in the first half. Redshirt freshman Georgia Phillipsย played the second half in goal and tallied three saves while allowing four scores.
UC San Diego jumped out to a 2-0 lead while holding the Bruins scoreless in the first period.
But the Bruins' offense went to work, scoring four goals in the second quarter while the defense pitched a shutout to take a 4-2 lead into the break. Senior Emily Skelly got the Bruins on the board with a strike from the front court followed by two-meter goals from Hill and junior Myna Simmons. Senior Brooke Maxsonย ended the scoring in the first half with aย goal from the front court.
The Bruins battled to a 2-2 tie in each of the third and fourth periods to preserve its two-goal lead. Sophomore Ava Johnson scored from set and sophomore Bella Baiaย found the back of the net from the front court as UCLA took a 6-4 lead into the fourth quarter.
Hill netted her second goal of the game from the front court in the fourth followed by a power play goal from freshman Hannah Palmer to end the scoring and provide the 8-6 final.
UCLAย returns to action later today when it takes on Iona at 2:00 p.m. PT and UCSB'sย Recreation Center.
