LOS ANGELESย --ย No. 3 UCLA (9-1, 1-0 MPSF) powered past No. 13 San Jose State (3-5, 0-1 MPSF) in the home opener for the Bruins and the league opener for both teams on Friday night at Dirks Pool at Spieker Aquatics Center. The Bruins improved to 38-0 all-time against the Spartans.
The Bruins were led byย freshman Abbi Hill, who scored four goals. Two other Bruins, sophomore Katrina Drake and junior Lexi Liebowitz, completed hat tricks. Redshirt freshman Georgia Phillips got the starting nod and played all but the final 1:24 of the fourth quarter, tallying sevenย saves while allowing 10ย goals. Freshman Quinn Winter played the last 1:24 of the game and registered one save, a blocked penalty shot with 0:25 left in the contest.
The two teams battled to a 4-4 tie in the first period. The Bruins got three power play goals from three different players to keep pace with SJSU. Hill (7:31) and Liebowitz (6:28) scored the first two goals of the game on 6-on-5 opportunities. Junior Roxy Wheaton scored from the front court (3:02) to put an end to a 3-0 run by the Spartans to tie the game at 3-3. Riley Agerbeek scored from the front court to put SJSU up 4-3 at the 1:25 mark of the opening period. Then senior Emily Skellyย scored an exclusion goal (0:59) to tie the game at 4-4 and end the scoring in the first period.
After a slow start to the second period, Hill opened the scoring again with a power play goal (3:52). The two teams traded goals for the remainder of the second quarter. Sophomore Ava Johnson scored from two meters (3:07) and Hill completed her hat trick when she converted a penalty shot (1:21) to put the Bruins back in front, 7-6. After a power play goal from SJSU'sย Tyanna Supreme tied it at 7-7 (0:50), Liebowitzย struck from the front court (0:37) for her second goal of the game to end the scoring in the first half with UCLA leading 8-7 at the break.
UCLA began to assert itself in the third period, winning the quarter 4-1. Sophomore Val Ayala found the back of the net from the front court (6:30) and Liebowitz completed her hat trick on a counter attack (5:22) to put UCLA up 10-7. After a power play goal from SJSU'sย Lili Urvari (4:47), the Bruins ended the quarter with back-to-back goals from Drake (1:49 and 0:58) to take a 12-8 lead into the fourth.
The Bruins' offense got hot in the fourth quarter, putting a six-spot on the scoreboard. Six different Bruins scored in the fourth quarter withย Junior Myna Simmons kicking things off with a goal from the front court (7:16). Hill netted her fourth of the game from set (6:31) and senior Brooke Maxsonย scored from the front court (5:10) to put UCLA up 15-10. Freshman Hannah Palmer followed with a counter score (4:35) and then Drake completed her hat trick with a goal from two meters (3:43) to make it 17-10. Freshman Alex Peros scored from the front court (1:24) to provide the 18-10 final.
UCLAย returns to action tomorrow when it hosts the UCLA Mini Tournament all day at Sunset Canyon Recreation Center and Spieker Aquatics Center. The Bruins will face No. 12 Fresno State at 11:30 a.m. PT and then close out the day with an exhibition scrimmage vs. No. 1 USC at 5:15 p.m. PT.
