No. 2 UCLA Splits a Pair on Day Two

IRVINE, Calif. -- No. 2 UCLA (16-2, 1-0 MPSF) split a pair of games on Saturday at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational and has been relegated to the third-place game against No. 3 Hawai'i on Sunday. The Bruins began the day with a 7-2 win over No. 10 Michigan (6-8). That win advanced the Bruins to the semifinals where No. 4 USC was waiting. The Trojans led 6-2 at halftime and 9-3 through three quarters. The Bruins mounted a furious rally, but couldn't complete the comeback, falling to the Trojans, 9-7, on Saturday night at the Anteater Aquatics Complex.
In the win over the Wolverines, the Bruins were led by sophomore Val Ayala and junior Myna Simmons who each scored two goals. Freshman Quinn Winter started in the cage for the Bruins and went the distance, registering four saves while allowing just two scores.
UCLA's defense registered 14 steals against Michigan -- which included four by Simmons and three by Ayala -- and two field blocks.
In the loss to the Trojans, Ayala once again led UCLA with two goals. Winter again got the starting nod in goal for the Bruins and tallied a season-high 10 saves while surrendering nine scores.
UCLA returns to action tomorrow in the third-place game of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational against No. 3 Hawai'i at 11:30 a.m. PT on Sunday, Feb. 23.
