SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- No. 3 UCLA (11-1, 1-0 MPSF) scored a season-high 21 goals without their leading scorer, freshman Abbi Hill, even firing a shot, as the Bruins thrashed Pomona-Pitzer (0-3) on Saturday morning, 21-2, at the UCSD Triton Invitational at Canyonview Aquatic Center. The Bruins improved to 6-0 all-time against the Sagehens.

The Bruins were led by freshman Hannah Palmer, who scored a season-high three goals, as UCLA had 13 players score in the game. Junior Jahmea Bent got the start in goal and played the first half, tallying five saves while allowing one goal. Freshman Quinn Winter played the second half of the game and registered five saves while surrendering one score.

UCLA pitched a shutout in the first period, winning the quarter 4-0. Palmer got things started when she scored on a counter attack at the 4:33 mark. Sophomore Bella Baia followed with a strike from the front court (2:27). Palmer then netted her second of the game on another counter (1:56) before sophomore Skylar Savar found the back of the net on a power play (0:56) to end the scoring in the opening period.

The Bruins won the second period, 6-1. UCLA scored back-to-back power play goals to open the second period. The first was put in by senior Emily Skelly (6:39) and the second by sophomore Bella Wentzel (3:48). Senior Brooke Maxson then scored back-to-back goals with a score on a nice drive and finish (2:21) and then a score from the front court just 16 seconds later to put UCLA up 8-1. Savar then scored her second of the game from the front court (0:36). Junior Myna Simmons beat the buzzer (0:01) with a goal from two meters as UCLA took a 10-1 lead into the break.

Lucie Abele scored the first goal of the third period for Pomona-Pitzer (6:42), but the Bruins ended the quarter on a 4-0 scoring run. Skelly notched her second goal of the game from the front court (6:12), followed by a counter score from junior Roxy Wheaton (2:23). Junior Lexi Liebowitz converted a penalty shot (1:47)  Freshman Brooke Doten scored her third goal of the year with a strong shot from set (0:28) to end the scoring in the period with UCLA holding a 14-2 lead after three.

The Bruins' offense got hot in the fourth quarter, putting a seven-spot on the scoreboard, with five different players scoring a goal. Redshirt freshman Alex Peros kicked off the scoring with a power play goal (7:13), followed by another exclusion goal from sophomore Katrina Drake (5:22). Sophomore Val Ayala then converted the Bruins' second penalty shot of the contest (3:32) to extend the lead to 17-2. Peros scored her second of the quarter on a counter (3:00) and then Palmer completed her hat trick with a counter score (2:33). Ayala netted her second of the game on a strike from the front court (1:27) as did Wentzel (0:30) to provide the 21-2 final.

UCLA returns to action today at 2:40 p.m. PT in the quarterfinals of the Triton Invitational at UC San Diego against No. 19 Indiana, which stunned No. 9 UC Davis, 12-11 in overtime.
