No. 3 UCLA Advances to MPSF Semifinals

STANFORD, Calif. --ย No. 3 UCLA (17-3, 1-2 MPSF) advanced to the MPSF semifinals with a 26-3 win over sixth-seeded Penn State Behrendย (0-20) on Friday afternoon at Stanford'sย Avery Aquatic Center.ย UCLA improved to 3-0 in the series history.Junior Tommy Gruwellย paced the UCLA offense with a career-high-tying five goals. He also added an assist to score six points. Graduate Chasen Travisanoย and junior Gabe Discipulo also had six points apiece, each with three goals and three assists.
Junior Bernardo Maurizi got the start in the cage and played the first quarter, registering four saves while allowing one goal. Sophomore Garret Griggs played the final three quarters and tallied 11 assists while surrendering two scores.
PERIOD ONE
> UCLA outscored the Lions 9-1 in the opening period, including the first nine goals of the game.
> Seven different Bruins scored in the opening period.
>ย Gruwell led UCLA with two goals in the first frame.
> Mauriziย had four saves and gave up one goal in the first quarter.

PERIOD TWO
> The Bruins outscored Penn State Behrend 6-1 in the second period.
> Griggs had two saves and allowed one goal in the second quarter.
> Six different Bruins combined to scores the six goals.
> UCLA led 15-2 at the break.

PERIOD THREE
> The Bruins used another six-goal scoring quarter to pull away from PSB after pitching a shutout in the third frame.
> Gruwell and Travisano each completed their hat tricks in the third period.
> Graduate Nicolas Saveljic and redshirt sophomore Jack Larsen each scored their second goals of the game in the third quarter.
> Junior Cameron Reagan and redshirt freshman Gianpiero Di Martire became the 10th and 11th Bruin, respectively, to score in the game.
PERIOD FOUR
> The Bruins won the fourth quarter, 5-1, to provide the 26-3 final score.
> Gruwell tacked on two more scores in the final stanza (7:02 and 4:17) to finish the game with five goals.
> Reagan (2:02), freshman Chase Dodd (1:23), and sophomore Guillermo Ocasio (0:34) each netted their second goal of the game in the fourth quarter.
