No. 4 UCLA Posts a Pair of 4-1 Wins Over No. 8 Pepperdine

LOS ANGELESย -- No. 4 UCLA (6-1) posted a pair of 4-1 victories over No. 8 Pepperdine (1-5)ย on Thursday morning and afternoon at Mapes Beach. With the wins, the Bruins improved to 10-6ย all-time against the Waves with seven straight victories in the series.
The first dual saw several changes in the Bruins' lineup after a few players were affected byย food poisoning. UCLA's Abby Van Winkle and Lea Monkhouse had little trouble with Pepperdine's Alexis Filippone and Sutton Mactavish, winning in straight sets by identical scores of 21-9 on court two. The other tandem in the first flight was on court four as the Bruins' Megan Muret and Jacqueline Quade defeated the Waves' Jordan Benoit and Mary Sinclair in straight sets, 21-9, 21-18, to put UCLA up 2-0. Court one sealed the win for UCLA as Savvy Simo and Lexy Denaburg took down Carly Skjodt and Brook Bauer in straight sets, 21-17, 21-16. Cami Sanchez and Jaden Whitmarsh paired up for a two-set win on court five, 21-19, 21-15, over Calista Wright and Cameron Baklenko. Pepperdine gained their only point of the first dual on court three when Simone Priebe and Melanie Paul defeated Lindsey Sparks and Hannah Phair, 21-17, 23-21.
The second dual began with the two teams splitting the first wave for a 1-1 tie. Muret and Quade put the Bruins on the board first with a two-set win over Sinclair and Benoit, 21-11, 21-16 on court four. Then the Waves tied it up with a three-set win on court two by Priebe and Paul over Van Winkle and Monkhouse, 21-19, 18-21, 15-11. The Bruins' Simo and Denaburg again defeated Skjodt and Bauer on court one in straight sets, 21-15, 21-14, to put UCLA up 2-1. Sanchez and Whitmarsh clinched the dual for UCLA with a two-set win on court five over Wright and Baklenko, 21-18, 21-12. Sparks and Phair bounced back on court three for a three-set win over Filippone and Mactavish, 18-21, 22-20, 15-13, to provide the 4-1 final.
The Bruins return to action on Thursday, March 25, when they travel to No. 8ย Pepperdineย in a double-header with the first dual starting at 10:00 a.m. followed by the second dual atย 12:00 p.m. PT in Malibu, Calif. It will mark the Bruins'ย seventh-straight dual against a top 10 team.
