No. 1 UCLA Picks Up Two Wins Over No. 5 LMU

LOS ANGELESย -- No. 1 UCLA (21-1) posted back-to-back home wins onย Wednesdayย over No. 5 Loyola Marymount (20-4) at Mapes Beach. The Bruins defeated the Lions 3-2 in the first dual and won 4-1 in the second dual. With the wins, the Bruins improved to 13-2 all-time against the LMU Lions with 11 straight wins in the series.
In the opening dual,ย Megan Muret and Jacqueline Quadeย defeatedย Sydnie Herrmannย and Darby Dunn in straight sets on court fourย 21-14, 21-19.
But the Lions tied it at 1-1 on court two where Reka Orsi Toth and Selina Marolfย outlastedย Lea Monkhouseย and Abby Van Winkleย 14-21, 21-18, 15-12.
In the second wave, court one's Lexy Denaburg and Savvy Simo defeated LMU'sย Iya Lindahl and Megan Rice 21-17, 21-17 to give the Bruins a 2-1 lead.
Again LMU tied it at 2-2 on court three as Savannah Slattery and Jessie Prichardย defeated Devon Newberry and Lindsey Sparks 21-18, 21-18.
It all came down to court five where UCLA's Jaden Whitmarsh and Rileigh Powers won their 15th consecutive match, defeating the Lions' Emma Doud and Madi Firnettย 21-19, 21-16.
In exhibition play, LMU's Cassie Chinnย and Jacinda Ramirezย defeatedย Cami Sanchez and Hannah Phair 21-19, 14-21, 15-10.
In the second dual, Muret and Quadeย took downย Herrmann and Dunn in straight sets on court fourย 21-13, 21-13.
Court two's Monkhouse and Van Winkle took downย Orsi Toth and Marolfย in two setsย 21-17, 21-16.
Firnett and Doud got the Lions on the board with a straight-set win on court five overย Powers and Whitmarsh 21-17, 21-16.
Denaburg and Simoย clinched the win for UCLA on court one with a come-from-behind win overย Lindahlย and Riceย 17-21, 21-16, 15-9.
Newberry and Sparks bounced back after dropping the first match on court three and the first set in the second dual to provide the 4-1 final, defeatingย Slatteryย and Prichard 17-21, 21-17, 15-12.
In exhibition action, Sanchez andย Phairย also bounced back, but against a different pair, taking down LMU'sย Georgia Fuscoย and Michaela Rezentesย 21-17, 21-18.
UCLA will now travel to San Luis Obispo, Calif., to compete in the Center of Effort Challenge hosted by Cal Poly. The Bruins will open the tournament on Friday, April 16 with No. 8 Grand Canyon (16-5) at 2:00 p.m. PDT. UCLA will end day one with No.ย 5ย LMU (20-4) at 3:15 p.m. The Bruins will open Saturday, April 17 with No. 6 Cal Poly (16-5)ย at 2:00ย p.m. followed by No. 2ย USCย (18-2) at 6:30 p.m. PT.ย
