No. 3 UCLA Posts Statement Win at No. 1 Stanford, 10-6

LOS ANGELES. -- No. 3 UCLA (17-1, 1-0) posted a statement win at No. 1 Stanford (17-1, 0-1), dominating the Cardinal in the second half for a 10-6 win on Saturday afternoon at Avery Aquatic Center. UCLA improved to 80-90 in the series history against the Cardinal.The Bruins outscored Stanford 4-0 in the third quarter and 7-2 in the final 16:01 of the game to win on the road in the MPSF opener for both teams. The Bruins had five players score in the game, led by sophomore Chase Dodd's season- and career-high-tying four goals. In just his second game back after missing 11 in a row, junior attacker Makoto Kenney scored twice, including the eventual game-winning goal on a power play at the 5:30 mark of the third period.
Senior Bernardo Maurizi got the start in the cage and went the distance, registering eight saves, two steals, and one assist while holding Stanford to a season-low six goals. The Cardinal averages 17.1 goals per game, but has scored just 14 combined goals in the two meetings against the Bruins.
Jackson Painter led the Cardinal with a hat trick while Nolan Krutonog had five saves while surrendering nine of the 10 goals to UCLA.
PERIOD ONE
> Stanford outscored UCLA 2-1 in the first period.
> After Stanford scored from the front court (7:38), Dodd answered with a strike from the front court (7:19) to tie it at 1-1.
> Stanford regained the lead with a power play goal (6:45) to end the scoring in the first.
PERIOD TWO
> UCLA outscored Stanford, 3-2, to tie it up at 4-4 heading into the break.
> The Bruins quickly tied the game at 2-2 when Dodd took a feed from Kenney to score a power play goal (7:38).
> Then Kenney scored off a pass from senior Andy Rodgers (5:06) to give the Bruins their first lead of the game at 3-2.
> Stanford would score back-to-back goals (3:00 and 1:09) to regain the lead at 4-3.
> But freshman Noah Rowe scored from distance at the buzzer (0:00) to end the scoring in the first half and stealing the momentum.
PERIOD THREE
> UCLA dominated the third period, 4-0, to take an 8-4 lead heading into the fourth.
> Dodd opened the scoring in the third with back-to-back goals (7:41 and 6:47) to give the Bruins a 6-4 advantage.
> Kenney scored his second of the game on a power play off a feed from redshirt sophomore Gianpiero Di Martire (5:30) to make it four straight goals to build a 7-4 lead.
> Super senior Jake Cavano made it 8-4 Bruins when he converted a penalty shot drawn by Dodd (3:49) to end the scoring in the period.
PERIOD FOUR
> The two teams battled to a 2-2 draw in the fourth quarter to provide the 10-6 final.
> Super senior Evan Rosenfeld opened the scoring in the fourth (7:41) off an unselfish feed from senior Tommy Gruwell on a counter to push the lead to 9-4 with the Bruins' sixth-straight goal.
> After Stanford scored (5:34), Di Martire scored for the Bruins from the front court (3:14) to make it 10-5.
> Painter scored on a power play for Stanford (2:12) to end the scoring in the game.
UP NEXT
The Bruins return to action on Thursday, Oct. 20 at 4:00 p.m. at home against UC Santa Barbara on Pac-12 Los Angeles.
