MALIBU, Calif. --ย No. 2 UCLA (15-1) used a strong defensive second half to defeatย No. 12 Pepperdineย (10-9) on the road, 10-8, on Sunday afternoon at Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool. UCLA improved to 84-31-1 in the series history against the Waves.

The Bruins had six players score in the game, led by redshirt sophomoreย Gianpiero Di Martire's hat trick. Di Martire also added three assists to lead all scorers in the game with six points. Super senior Jake Cavano and senior Tommy Gruwell each added two scores for the Bruins. Gruwell's power play goal at the 2:52 mark of the fourth quarter proved to be the game winner with redshirt junior Jack Larsen adding an insurance goal late in the fourth (1:45).

Senior Bernardo Maurizi got the start in the cage and went the distance, registering a season-high 13 saves and three steals while allowing eight goals.

Adam Csapo led Pepperdine with a hat trick while Zachย Cwiertnia had seven savesย while surrendering 10 goals to UCLA.

PERIOD ONE
> Pepperdine outscored UCLA 3-2ย in the first period.
> Cavanoย opened the scoring with a cross-cage shot (5:47) to put the Bruins up 1-0.
> But the Waves responded with three straight goals (5:24, 3:47, and 3:05) to build a 3-1 advantage.
> Senior Andy Rodgers beat the shot clock buzzer (2:28) to trim the deficit to 3-2, ending the scoring in the first.

PERIOD TWO
> Pepperdine outscored the Bruins, 2-1ย in the second period to build aย 5-3 lead at the break.
> The Waves opened the scoring in the second (7:08), butย Di Martire scored on a power play (2:47) to trim the Waves' lead to 4-3.
> The Waves scored from two meters (2:36) to end the scoring in the first half.

PERIOD THREE
> UCLA outscored Pepperdine in the third period, 4-3, to close the gap to 8-7 Waves,ย heading into the fourth.
>ย Gruwell opened the scoring in the third with a power play goal (5:35) to pull the Bruins to within one at 5-4.
> Sophomore Chase Dodd then tied the game at 5-5 with a power play goal (4:24).
> Pepperdine regained the lead (4:00), but Di Martire scored his second on a power play (3:16) to tie it at 6-6.
> The Waves took an 8-6 lead with back-to-back goals (1:06 and 0:11) but the Bruins' stole the momentum with another buzzer beater, this time from Cavano, who took a feed from freshman Noah Rowe on a 7-on-6 to score at the buzzer.

PERIOD FOUR
> UCLA outscored the Waves 3-0 inย the fourth quarter to provide the 10-8ย final.
> Di Martire opened the scoring in the fourth with a power play goal, completing a hat trick in the process (5:09) to tie it at 8-8.
>ย Gruwell then put the Bruins back in front for the first time since UCLA led 1-0 to start the game with a power play score (2:52), his second of the game. It proved to be the game-winning goal.
> Redshirt junior Jack Larsen put the nail in the coffin with a strike from the front court (1:45) to put UCLA up 10-8, ending the scoring.

UP NEXT
The Bruins return home to host UC San Diego in their lone game of the week on Saturday, Oct. 8ย at 1:00 p.m. PT at Dirks Pool at Spieker Aquatics Center.
