LOS ANGELESย --ย No. 1 UCLA (19-1) held off a pesky No. 7 UC Davis (12-7) for a 10-9 winย at Dirks Pool at Spieker Aquatics Center on Saturday afternoon. UCLA improved to 19-0ย all-time in the series history against UC Davis.After the Bruins led 1-0 at the end of the first period, both teams battled to a draw in the three quarters that followed. UCLA never trailed in the fourth quarter where both teams scored five goals apiece.ย The Bruins had six players score in the game, led by senior Tommy Gruwell's hat trick. Sophomore Chase Dodd and junior Makoto Kenney each scored twice for UCLA.
Senior Bernardo Maurizi got the start in the cage and went the distance, registering six saves and three steals, while allowing nine goals.
Aleix Aznar Beltran led the Aggies with four goals while Aaron Wilson had five savesย while surrendering 10 goals to UCLA.
PERIOD ONE
> UCLA outscored UC Davis 1-0 to take a slim lead heading into the secondย period.
> Redshirt junior Jack Larsen got the Bruins on the board (2:22) off a feed from Kenney.
PERIOD TWO
> Both teams battled to a 1-1 draw with UCLA taking a 2-1ย leadย heading into the break.
>ย Gruwell opened the scoring in the second (1:49) on a one-timer off a feed from super senior Evan Rosenfeld to make it 2-0.
> UC Davis scored a power play goal (1:17) to end the scoring in the second period.
PERIOD THREE
> Both teams battled to a 3-3 draw in theย third period as UCLA would take a 5-4 lead heading into the fourth.
> UC Davis opened the scoring in the third with back-to-back goalsย (7:33 and 6:28), to take a 3-2 lead.
> Redshirt freshman Grant Lothย answered with a goal at set off a feed from super senior Jake Cavano (6:10) to tie it up at 3-3.
>ย Gruwell put the Bruins back in front with a nice lob shot after an ordinary foul (1:22) for his second score of the game.
> After UC Davis converted a penalty shot (0:52), Cavano scored a power play goal (0:15) to end the scoring in the third.
PERIOD FOUR
> The two teams battled to a 5-5 drawย inย the fourth quarter to provide the 10-9 final.
> The Aggies opened the scoring in the fourth (7:17) with a power play goal to tie it at 5-5, but Kenney answered with a bar-in near-post strike (5:21) to put the Bruins back in front.
> Dodd then beat the Aggie keeper (3:43) with a near-side strike to put UCLA up 7-5.
> After a power play goal for UC Davis (3:06), Gruwellย completed his hat trick (2:40) to push the lead back to two goals at 8-6.
> The Aggies converted a penalty shot (2:01) to trim the Bruins' lead to 8-7, but Dodd scored his second on a power play (1:26) off a feed from Kenney to give the Bruins a 9-7 lead.
> UC Davis scored on a rare 6-on-3 (0:55) to make it a one-goal game at 9-8.
> Kenney scored the eventual game-winning goal (0:30) with a score from the front court that put the Bruins up 10-8.
> The Aggies' Beltran ended the scoring with his fourth goal of the game (0:14). UCLA ran out the clock to seal the win.
UP NEXT
The Bruins return to action on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 1:00 p.m. at home against No. 2 California. The game will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks. The annual Alumni Game will follow at 2:30 p.m.
