No. 2 UCLA Rallies but Falls at No. 3 USC, 12-11

LOS ANGELES -- No. 2 UCLA (22-3, 2-1 MPSF WEST) made a furious rally but fell at No. 3 USC (17-6, 1-2 MPSF WEST), 12-11 on Saturday afternoon at USC's Uytengsu Aquatics Center. UCLA fell to 94-89-1 all-time in the series history.A total of six different Bruins scored in the game, paced by three goals each from senior Tommy Gruwell and redshirt sophomore Gianpiero Di Martire. Gruwell led UCLA in total points with five (two assists). Super senior Jake Cavano was the only other multiple-goal scorer in the game for the Bruins, finishing with two scores in the final 3:02 of the game.
Senior Bernardo Maurizi got the start in the cage and went the distance, making seven saves and one steal while allowing 12 goals.
Jake Ehrhardt and Carson Kranz led the Trojans with three goals apiece. Kyle McKenney played the entire game in the cage for USC and was credited with eight saves and one steals while giving up 11 goals to UCLA.
USC led wire-to-wire and jumped out to a 2-0 lead that it pushed to 5-2 at the end of the first period. The Trojans led 8-3 at halftime and outshot the Bruins 19-7 in the first half.
The Bruins trailed by as many as five goal (11-6) at the 1:09 mark of the third quarter, outscoring the Trojans 5-1 down the stretch. Despite winning the third and fourth quarters, UCLA could never get the equalizing goal. UCLA won the third quarter, 4-3, and the fourth quarter, 4-1.
UP NEXT
The Bruins will take on No. 1 California, which was upset by No. 4 Stanford, 12-9. The Golden Bears have defeated UCLA six straight times dating back to the 2020 season (took place in 2021). The two teams will square off in the MPSF West third-place game tomorrow at 11:15 a.m. PT at Uytengsu Aquatics Center.
