STANFORD, Calif.ย -- No. 3ย UCLA (23-2) concluded the first day of competition at the Pac-12 North Invitational with a 5-0 sweep of Arizona State (11-13) on Saturday evening at Stanford's Graduate School of Business Courts. UCLA improved to 8-1ย all-time against the Sun Devils with its eight-consecutive win in the series and its 10th sweep of the season.
Lexy Denaburg and Abby Van Winkle put the Bruins up 1-0 with a 21-15, 21-18,ย win on court one over the Sun Devils' Cierra Flood and Lexi Sweeny.
Marlie Monserezย paired with Rileigh Powers for the first time this season and earned a 21-18, 21-19, win on court four over ASU's Kate Fitzgerald and Kylie Wickleyย to put UCLA up 2-0.
UCLA's Devon Newberry and Jaden Whitmarshย improved to 19-2 on the year (3-1 on court two) with a 21-15, 21-15, win over Lila Bordis and Anya Pemberton to clinch the dual win for the Bruins.
Lea Monkhouse and Jessie Smith also paired with each other for the first time this season and defeated Arizona State's Rylie Kael and Sarah Waters in a three-set thriller, 21-13, 20-22, 15-11, to put UCLA up 4-0.
Tessa Van Winkle and Peri Brennan improved to 2-0 on the season with a 21-18, 21-14, win on court five over ASU's Taryn Ames and Maddy Salazar.
In exhibition play, UCLA's Pani Napoleon and Katie Hashman took down ASU's Shane Burleson and Lauren Weintraub, 21-15, 21-19.
The Bruins return to action tomorrow when they take on Oregonย (9-12) at 8:00 a.m. at Stanford's Graduate School of Business Courts.
