SAN DIEGO --ย No. 3 UCLA (4-0) got off to a strong defensive start and never let up, winning the Triton Invitational crown with an 8-6 upset win over No. 2 USC (3-1) on Sunday afternoon at UCSD'sย Triton Pool. UCLA improved to 92-88-1ย in the series history against the Trojans.The Bruins had seven different players score in the game, paced by super senior Jake Cavano'sย game-high-tying two goals. Cavano's second goal at 6:33 of the fourth quarter put the Bruins up 7-4 and was the eventual game-winning goal.
Senior Bernardo Mauriziย started the contest in the cage and was stellar, holding USC to just six goals while registering 11 saves (62.5 percent save percentage) and three steals.
PERIOD ONE
> UCLA pitched a shutout on the Trojans in the first period. The Bruins' lone goal of the opening quarter came from junior Hayden Nightingale from the front court off a feed fromย redshirt sophomore Gianpiero Di Martire (4:53).
PERIOD TWO
> The Bruins and Trojans battled to a 1-1 draw in the second period as the Bruins took a 2-1ย leadย into the break.
> Senior Andy Rodgers put the Bruins up 2-0 (5:22) off a pass from freshman Gray Carson.
> Theย Trojans scored a power play (0:33) to end the scoring in the first half, breaking their scoreless streak of 15:27.

PERIOD THREE
> The Bruins won the third quarter, 4-3, to take a 6-4 lead into the final period.
> The Trojans opened the scoring in the second half (5:31) to tie it up at 2-2.
> But UCLA responded with back-to-back goals from senior Gabe Discipulo (4:47) and Di Martireย (4:03) to put UCLA up 4-2.
> After a Trojan power play goal (2:10), Cavanoย scored his first of the game from six meters after an ordinary foul (1:50) to push the lead back to two goals at 5-3.
> Another Trojan power play goal (1:32) trimmed it to one, but redshirt junior Jack Larsen answered with a power play goal for the Bruins (0:50), to push the lead back to two, ending the scoring in the third period.
PERIOD FOUR
> Both teams battled to a 2-2 draw in the fourth quarter to provide the 8-6 final.
> Cavano's second of the game came on a power play (6:33) and extended the Bruins' lead to three at 7-4, the largest lead of the game.
> The Trojans would score from the front court (2:36), but senior Tommy Gruwellย made it 8-5 (2:15) on the next possession, scoring from six meters out after an ordinary.
> USC tacked on a meaningless goal with 0:20 left to end the scoring.
UP NEXT
The Bruins return home to host No. 5 Long Beach State in their home opener on Friday, Sept. 9, at 7:00 p.m. PT at Dirks Pool at Spieker Aquatics Center.
