STANFORD, Calif.ย --ย No. 1 UCLA (17-0, 3-0 MPSF WEST) continued its dominating ways with an impressive defensive effort, winning at No. 5 Stanford (10-5, 1-2), 11-7, on Sunday afternoon at Avery Aquatic Center. The seven goals were the fewest Stanford has scored all season. UCLA improved to 82-90 all-time against the Cardinal.

The Bruins had eight players score in the contest, led by three goals from senior Makoto Kenney. Kenney led the Bruins in the game with four points (also had one assist). Redshirt freshman Ben Larsen was the only other Bruin with multiple goals, scoring twice to go with one assist for three total points.

Senior Garret Griggsย got the start in the cage and went the distance, tallying 14 saves with one steal and one assist while allowing just seven goals.

The Bruins won the first period, 4-2, after Stanford scored the opening goal of the game. Redshirt junior Maximo Rossi scored his second goal of the season on a power play (3:16), off a feed from redshirt freshman Frederico Jucá Carsaladeย to tie it at 1-1. Ben Larsen would then score back-to-back goals (2:22 and 0:31) on a drive with an assist from Kenney and then from two meters with an assist from sophomore Noah Rowe, to put UCLA up 3-1. After a goal by the Cardinal, Freshman Wade Sherlock beat the buzzer on a 7-on-6 play off a pass from freshman Ben Liechty to end the scoring in the first quarter.

UCLA would win the second quarter, 2-1, to double up the Cardinal, 6-3, at halftime. Stanford cut it to 4-3 with a power play goal (6:05), but redshirt sophomore Grant Loth scored from two meters off an assist from Rowe (3:38) and Kenney scored his first from the front court off a feed from Ben Liechtyย (0:52) to end the scoring in the second period.

Both teams battled to a 2-2 draw in the third as UCLA would take a 8-5 lead into theย final stanza. Stanford would never get closer than three goals in the second half, and would also never score back-to-back goals in the second half as the Bruins would have an answer after every Stanford score. Redshirt sophomore Eli Liechty opened the scoring in the third (6:26) at two meters off a feed from Ben Larsen. Then after a goal for the Cardinal, Kenney scored a power play goal (3:34) to put UCLA up 8-4. Stanford would score the final goal of the third quarter (2:07) to trim the Bruins' lead to 8-5.

The Bruins won the final period, 3-2, to provide the 11-7 final. Freshman Marcell Szécsi opened the scoring with a goal from two meters off an assist from senior Jack Larsen (7:34) to push the lead to 9-5. Stanford would get a power play goal (4:10), but the Bruins would answer with a great play, capped off by a goal fromย Jucá Carsalade (3:55) off an assist from Griggs to make it 10-6. Kenney would then complete his hat trick (2:46) off another assist from Ben Liechty to extend the lead to 11-6. Turning to its defensive effort, the Bruins only attempted one shot the rest of the way and held Stanford to just one power play goal down the stretch (0:45) to preserve the 11-7 victory.

UP NEXT: The Bruins will return home to host No. 3 USC on Saturday, Oct. 14 at 1:00 p.m. at Dirks Pool at Spieker Aquatics Center. The game will be televised live on Pac-12 Los Angeles. The Bruins' annual Alumni Game will follow.
