Three Bruins Record Double-Doubles in 113-64 Win over Bellarmine

November 12, 2023 | Women's Basketball

LOS ANGELES – UCLA Women's Basketball (3-0, 0-0) won its third-straight game to open the 2023-24 season behind explosive scoring and strong rebounding efforts. No. 4 UCLA won 113-64 Sunday inside Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom, downing Bellarmine University in the first-ever meeting between the programs.

Three Bruins recorded double-doubles in the victory; sophomore Gabriela Jaquez was the first to corral her 10th rebound, which came halfway through the third quarter (12 REB total). Sophomore Lauren Betts (22 PTS, 11 REB) was next to earn hers, grabbing an offensive rebound in the final three minutes to secure double digits in the rebounding column. Graduate student Charisma Osborne (24 PTS, 10 REB) was the final Bruin in the double-double club, reeling in her 10th rebound late in the fourth quarter.

Jaquez poured in a career-high 30 points (prev. high: 18 vs. UC Riverside - Nov. 9, 2023) in the dominant win. The last time UCLA surpassed the 100-point threshold was at home against San Jose State on Dec. 5, 2021 (W, 112-33); the last Bruin to score 30 was Osborne against Oklahoma in the second round of the 2023 NCAA March Madness tournament (36 points; Mar. 20, 2023).

UCLA had 25 offensive boards to Bellarmine's six; the Knights totaled only 24 rebounds in the game. The Bruins secured 56 boards in the victory.

Sophomore Londynn Jones added 21 points (5-12 3FG) on Sunday to round out Bruins in double figures. Sophomore Kiki Rice had 11 assists to go with her eight points and six rebounds; Rice has had 10+ assists in two of her first three games to begin the season. The point guard swiped three of UCLA's 13 steals on Sunday.

The Bruins started things off on another strong run, outscoring the Knights 13-0 before the first media timeout. UCLA grabbed three-consecutive offensive rebounds before forcing Bellarmine to call the stoppage. Osborne scored 11 points in the opening quarter.

UCLA had offensive struggles to start the second period, missing four of its first five shots. The Knights reduced their deficit to nine points off a three-pointer with 5:57 left in the half. Jaquez showed up and showed out for the Bruins; the sophomore forward lit it up and scored 14-consecutive points for UCLA in two minutes and three seconds of game time.

UCLA led 50-31 at the break.

The Bruins came out firing to start the second half, racking up a 15-6 run. Jones hit two three-pointers, and Jaquez and Betts attacked the paint to take advantage of the undersized Bellarmine. With an offensive rebound late in the period, Jaquez secured her first-career double-double. It was a 33-point quarter for the Bruins – Jaquez had 26 in quarters two and three combined. The Bruins were up 83-50 heading into the final frame.

UCLA did not relent, outpacing Bellarmine 30-14 in the final 10 minutes of play.
