TUCSON, Ariz. – The No. 23 UCLA swim and dive team earned a 152-147 win over Arizona at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center on Saturday afternoon. The Bruins (4-1) had six event wins against the Wildcats (1-2) on Saturday.
The Bruins opened the day with a second place showing in the 200 yard IM, before Ashley Kolessar earned UCLA's first event win of the day. She won the 1000 yard freestyle in 9:56.99.
Brooke Schaffer followed that up with a third-place finish in the third event of the day, the 200 yard freestyle. She finished in 1:48.56. Rosie Murphy followed that with another third place for the Bruins in the next discipline, the 100 yard backstroke. The Sacramento, California native finished in 55.09.
UCLA earned their first podium sweep of the day in the 100 yard breaststroke. Ana Jih-Schiff topped the timing charts with a 1:00.43, and was followed closely by Sarah Bennetts in second in 1:00.67, and Eva Carlson rounded out the top three with a time of 1:00.87.
As for the 200 yard butterfly, the Bruins took second and third in the event. Paige Macehearn came in second for the Bruins with a time of 1:58.39, while Aislinn Walsh placed third in 2L00.72 for UCLA.
Schaffer tallied her second podium of the day in the 50 yard freestyle. The Mountain View, California native earned the Bruins their second event win of the afternoon with a time of 22.95.
UCLA continued to climb back into the dual in the 100 yard freestyle, where they picked up two more podium places. Schaffer claimed her third podium of the afternoon when she finished second in 49.31, while Gizem Guvenc placed third in the discipline in 49.99 to pick up more valuable points for the squad.
Rosie Murphy added another win to the Bruins tally in the 200 yard backstroke. She won the event in 1:57.03, while Mia Chang finished third in 2:00.53.
The Bruins then swept the podium in the 200 yard breaststroke. Jih-Schiff, Bennetts, and Carlson combined again to go 1-2-3 in the event to earn crucial points in the team battle for the Bruins.
Kolessar claimed her second win of the day in the 500 yard freestyle. She won the event in 4:49.70 while MacEachern placed third in the event in 4:52.04.
Zoe Jespersgaard and Lauren Hallaselka finished 1-2 in the 3-meter dive, scoring 325.28 points and 287.70 points respectively. As for the 1-meter dive, Jespersgaard and Savana Trueb finished second and third while tallying 273.75 and 262.50 points each.
With the team scoring coming down to the wire, MacEachern stepped up again for the Bruins, this time in the 400 yard IM. She finished first in the event in 4:13.92, while Murphy finished right behind her in second with a time of 4:15.93.
UCLA returns to action on November 15th-17th at the Art Adamson Invitational, hosted by Texas A&M.
