IRVINE, Calif.ย โ Freshman Anna Pearsonย and graduate student Katrina Drakeย eachย scored two goals to lead No. 3 UCLA women's water polo team (10-1) to a 12-9 road win at No. 6 UC Irvine (6-5) on Saturday afternoon at UCI's Anteater Aquatics Complex.
A total of 10 Bruins got into the scoring column in the win, including a team-high three points each from graduate student Val Ayala and junior Malia Allen (one goal and two assists).
Redshirt senior Georgia Phillips got the start in the cage and played the firstย half, registering six saves while allowing two goals. Junior Sydney Chiang came in for the second half and also had six saves but surrendered five goals. The other two goals UCLA allowed were given up by Taylor Smith who was wearing 1B at the time as UCLA was trying to execute a 7-on-6 play but failed twice down the stretch.

The Bruins trailed 2-1 after a slow start to the first period. UCLA committed five turnovers and scored on just one of its five shots, a front court strike from Drake at the 2:45 mark of the opening period.
UCLA dominated the second period 5-0, to take a 6-2 lead into the break and take charge of the game. Allen opened the scoring in the second (7:20) with her first goal then Ayala scored a power play goal (6:34) to give UCLA its first lead of the game, one it would not relinquish. Freshman Genoa Rossi then added a power play goal (5:35) to push the lead to 4-2. Drake would add her second of the game from the front court (2:17) to push the lead to 5-2. Sophomore Molly Renner then scored a power play goal (0:03) to end the scoring in the second quarter.
The Bruins won the third quarter 4-2 to extend the lead to 10-4ย heading into the final stanza. UCLA scored first in the third when senior Hannah Palmer scored a power play goal (7:38). Renner followed with her second goal of the game on a counter (6:20) to put the Bruins up 8-2. The two teams traded two goals over the rest of the third with Pearson scoring both of her goals from two meters (3:47 and 1:37) with Ayala and Allen picking up the assists.
The Anteaters won the fourth quarter, 5-2, scoring three goals on an empty net. Senior Brooke Doten got things started with a nice drive and finish off a feed from Renner (6:43) to put UCLA up 11-4. After three-straight goals from UCI, sophomore Emma Lineback extended her scoring streak to 11 games to open the season with a goal on a 7-on-6 play (1:09) to put UCLA up 12-7. The Anteaters scored the final two goals on an empty net (0:58 and 0:16).
Elena Flynn scored three goals on 12 shots to lead UC Irvine. Faith Tedesco had eight saves while allowing six goals. Erin Tharp had four saves while also allowing six goals.
The Bruins return to action on Friday, Feb. 24 when they open play in the Barbara Kalbus Invitational at UC Irvine against a team TBD.
GAME NOTES:ย This wasย the 33rd meeting between UCLA and UC Irvine with the Bruins leading the series 33-0 โฆ the Bruins engineered a 7-0 scoring run that started at 7:20 of the second period and ended at 5:52 of the thirdย โฆ UCLA has registered 19 hat tricks in the first 11 games of the year, but failed to register one for just the third time this season against the Anteaters (also didn't in the win against Wagner on Jan. 21 and in the overtime loss to No. 2 USC on Feb. 5) โฆ Linebackย scored a goal in the fourth quarter to extend her goal scoring streak to 11 games (she is the only Bruin to score in all 11 games this season).
