No. 3 UCLA Advances to Semifinals with 15-3 Win at No. 18 UC San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif.ย โ€“ Freshman Anna Pearsonย scored a career-high five goals to lead the No. 3 UCLA women's water polo team (8-0) to a dominant 15-3 win atย 18th-ranked UC San Diego (4-6)ย in the quarterfinals of the Triton Invitationalย on Saturday morning at UCSD'sย Canyonview Pool.

A total of six Bruins got into the scoring column in the victory with graduate student Val Ayala and sophomore Emma Linebackย each adding a hat trickย for the Bruins.

Junior Sydney Chiang got the start in the cage and had nine saves while allowing two goals in the first half. Redshirt senior Georgia Phillips came on in relief in the second half and registered three saves while allowing one goal.

The Bruins opened up with a 3-1 lead in the first quarter. UCLA scored the first three goals of the game with freshman Sienna Green opening the scoring with a goal at full strength (6:18) off a feed from senior Brooke Doten. Pearson then netted her first (5:40) off an assist from senior Fiona Kuesis. Then junior Malia Allen set up Pearson for her second goal (4:07) of the game. Kendall Thomas scored a power play goal for the Tritons (2:27)ย to end the scoring in the first period.

UCLA won the second period 4-1, to take a 7-2 lead into the break. Lineback opened the scoring in the second period with a power play goal (4:04) off an assist from freshman Taylor Smith. After a goal by UCSD, Ayala scored her first on a power play (2:59) and senior Hannah Palmer followed with a strike from the front court (2:30) to push the lead to 6-2. Ayala scored her second of the game and the last of the second period (0:03) as the Bruins executed the 7-on-6 to perfection with Lineback picking up the assist.

The Bruins won the third quarter 5-1 to build a 12-3 lead heading into the final stanza. Lineback scored her second of the game on a strike from the front court (6:07) off another feed from Doten to open the scoring in the third period. Pearson then completed her hat trick (5:14) off an assist from Ayala and Lineback followed suit with her third goalย (4:15) off a pass from Palmer. UCSD would snap the Bruins 6-0 scoring run with a goal from the front court (3:52), but Allen got in on the scoring with her first goal (2:46) off a feed from Palmer to provide an answer. Pearson took a feed from freshman Genoa Rossi and ended the scoring in the third with her fourth goal (on four shots) at the 1:30 mark.

UCLA won the fourth quarter, 3-0, to provide the 15-3 final. Allen scored her second of the game with Doten picking up her third assist to open the scoring in the fourth (7:40). Pearson would score her fifth goal (on five shots) off another assist from Smith (0:50) to push the lead to 14-3. Ayala would end the scoring in the game, completing her hat trick in the process, when she took a feed from Lineback to score a power play goal (0:01).

Lucia Doak, Kendall Thomas, and Sydney Munatones each scored one goal to lead UC San Diego. Lexi Stahl had eight saves and two steals while surrendering 15 goals to UCLA.

The Bruins return to action later today when they face No. 5 Hawai'i in the semifinals of the Triton Invitationalย at 2:20 p.m. PTย at UCSD'sย Triton Pool.
