January 27, 2024 | Gymnastics
LOS ANGELES – UCLA recorded season-high totals on all four events, closing with strong marks of 49.5 on balance beam and 49.625 on floor exercise to secure a convincing 197.825-196.300 win over Washington in the home and Pac-12 opener in Pauley Pavilion, presented by Wescom.
Sophomore Selena Harris won the all-around with a 39.625 and captured first on bars with a 9.9. Senior Chae Campbell's 9.95s on vault and floor gave her two event wins, as she tied with junior Brooklyn Moors for first on floor. Junior Emma Malabuyo's 9.95 on beam led all athletes on the event.
Freshman Katelyn Rosen made her all-around debut, finishing in third place with a score of 39.250. She scored a season-high 9.9 on vault and added a 9.875 on bars in clutch situations, performing after a fall on each of those events.
"This was really fun to be back in Pauley," said The R.C. Rothman UCLA Head Gymnastics Coach Janelle McDonald. "Great crowd today; so much energy. And I love that our fans love gymnastics so much. The energy that they brought today made our team so excited and made them want to perform and want to compete, and that was really great to see."
UCLA led from start to finish, surpassing Washington after the first rotation with a team score of 49.400 on vault. Campbell led all gymnasts on the event with a deduction-free 9.95 on her Yurchenko full, the seventh time in her career she has earned a perfect score for that vault. Rosen and Harris tied for second place with scores of 9.9, and Emily Lee's leadoff 9.875 tied for fourth place. The Huskies kept it close with a 49.250 on the uneven bars, with senior Taylor Russon leading her team with a 9.875.
The Bruins increased their lead in rotation two after scoring 49.300 on uneven bars to Washington's 48.850 on vault. Harris had the event's only 9.9 score, as she anchored the event for the first time in her career. Rosen recorded another second-place finish with a 9.875. Campbell and Malabuyo each contributed 9.85s, and Margzetta Frazier added a 9.825.
UCLA was spectacular on balance beam in rotation three, with all six gymnasts scoring 9.85 or higher and four earning 9.9 or above. As she did on vault, Lee set the tone with a strong routine, earning 9.9. Rosen and Emma Andres followed with scores of 9.85. Harris scored her third consecutive 9.9 on the day, and Malabuyo was nearly perfect, scoring 9.95. Ciena Alipio closed the rotation with a season-high 9.9, giving UCLA a 49.500 beam total and a three-event score of 148.200, just over a point ahead of the Huskies' 147.175.
The famous Pauley floor party more than lived up to its billing, as UCLA recorded a season-high 49.625 on the event. Moors started a string of 9.925 or higher scores to close the set, tying her career-best with a 9.95. Harris and Nya Reed followed with 9.925s, and Campbell closed the night with a season-high 9.95. Malabuyo also contributed a 9.875 to lead off the rotation.
UCLA remains at home next Sunday, competing against Arizona at 2pm. The meet will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
