Bruins Tame the Waves, 91-54

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The No. 5 UCLA Women's Basketball (3-0, 0-0 Big 10) team picked up its third win of the season against Pepperdine at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom on Tuesday afternoon. The Bruins dominated the Waves, reaching the final buzzer with a 37-point win, 91-54.
Junior Lauren Betts secured the fifteenth double-double of her career during the third quarter of UCLA's victory over Pepperdine (1-2, 0-0 WCC). The center had 17 points and 12 rebounds alongside four assists, a block, and a steal. Her efficiency was elite, finishing 7-9 shooting after not missing a shot in the first half.
Junior transfer Janiah Barker recorded her first double-double in a Bruin jersey, finishing with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Barker also picked up an assist and two steals.
UCLA outrebounded Pepperdine 56-22, smothering the boards in Tuesday's win. Five Bruins secured five or more rebounds in the victory.
The Bruins got off to a quick start in the first quarter, starting the game with an 18-0 run. Betts led the Bruins in scoring in the first quarter, putting in nine points. The center's scoring frenzy included buckets on back-to-back possessions. Junior Timea Gardiner also had an impressive make in the first, capitalizing on a four-point play after she was fouled on a 3-pointer in front of Pepperdine's bench. The team found success on the defensive end, holding Pepperdine to zero field goals for the first six minutes of the period. Freshman Elina Aarnisalo, Betts and Barker each recorded a steal in the period.
UCLA continued to score at a high level in the second quarter. Junior Gabriela Jaquez provided the energy in her second start of the season, picking up four points, four rebounds, and an assist in the second set of ten minutes. The Bruins continued to be solid on the glass, recording nine offensive and eight defensive rebounds in the second period. Freshman Avary Cain made her mark by lacing a three pointer and picking up a block in the final 30 seconds of the frame.
The Bruins asserted their dominance on both ends of the floor in the third quarter, scoring 20 points and holding Pepperdine to only four made baskets. Betts earned her double-double early in the third, picking up four points and four rebounds in seven minutes. Barker continued to break down the defense, recording four points, three rebounds, and a steal in the third period. Cain and Aarnisalo both hit three-pointers in the final two minutes of the third quarter, extending the lead to 70-37.
UCLA finished strong, scoring 21 points in the fourth quarter. Aarnisalo picked up her ninth assist of the game in the final frame while also contributing 16 points to UCLA's win. She scored with high-level efficiency, missing only two shots in the game. Jaquez helped to seal the win, contributing six points in the final two minutes of play and finishing with a season-high 15 points after missing Sunday's contest.
The Bruins finished with 91 points, their highest point total of the young season.
