Bruins Topple No. 1 Gamecocks, 77-62

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The No. 5 UCLA Women's Basketball team (5-0, 0-0 Big Ten) picked up a dominant win over the defending national champions in No. 1 South Carolina (5-1, 0-0 SEC) at Pauley Pavilion on Sunday afternoon, 77-62. The win marks the first victory over a number one ranked team in program history.
Five Bruins finished in double figures, led by junior Londynn Jones. The shooter scored 15 points on 5-of-5 from long distance and added three steals. Freshman Elina Aarnisalo added 13 points with four assists and three rebounds. Junior Gabriela Jaquez scored eleven points, keeping her energy high off of the bench.
Junior Lauren Betts picked up her fourth double-double of the season, finishing with 11 points and 14 rebounds. In her first start of the season, junior Kiki Rice scored 11 points alongside three assists, a block, and a steal. Junior Janiah Barker finished with eight points, seven rebounds, and three assists.
UCLA got off to a quick start in the first quarter, outscoring South Carolina 20-10. Elina Aarnisalo was the first to score in the game with a layup off the fastbreak converted from her own steal. The Bruins were dominant on defense, holding the Gamecocks to no field goals made in the first five minutes. Gabriela Jaquez hit two free throws and an open 3-pointer on back-to-back possessions to grow UCLA's lead to 7-2. She led the quarter in scoring with seven points.
The Bruins extended their lead to 43-22 in the second quarter. Their scoring dominance was a shared effort, with six Bruins scoring in the period. Aarnisalo led the quarter in points with seven and Rice had five. Jones, Timea Gardiner, and Aarnisalo each picked up a three-pointer, and Janiah Barker picked two points alongside three rebounds, an assist, and a steal. The Bruins continued to play lockdown defense in the quarter, holding the Gamecocks to only 32.4% from the field.
UCLA maintained its 20-point lead through the third quarter, fighting off any comeback attempt from South Carolina. Betts was solid in the frame, collecting four points, four rebounds, and a block in the period. Rice scored four points in the quarter, including a tough, contested layup converted off of her own steal.
The Bruins stayed steady through the fourth, finishing 15 points ahead of the Gamecocks. Jones scored her fifth three-pointer of the night off of a steal from Angela Dugalic. Betts picked up four points, two rebounds, and an assist in the fourth. The team continued their defensive dominance in the fourth quarter, finishing the game with 41 rebounds to South Carolina's 34. The Bruins ended South Carolina's 43-game win streak, the longest streak in college basketball.
UP NEXT - vs. UT-Martin (Nov. 29)
The Bruins will travel to Hawai'i for the Rainbow Wahine Showdown over the Thanksgiving break. UCLA's first game of the event comes against UT-Martin. The game will tip off on Friday, Nov. 29th at 2 p.m. PST in Honolulu, Hawai'i.
The Bruins are slated to face Fresno State (Nov. 30) and event host Hawai'i (Dec. 1) while on the islands.
