No. 2 UCLA Takes Down Three Top 10 Teams on Saturday, Including No. 1 USC

HONOLULUย -- No. 2 UCLA (4-3) posted three dual victories over top 10 teams on Saturdayย (Feb. 24) to win the gold medal at the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classicย atย Queen'sย Beach. The Bruins opened with a 5-0 sweep of No. 9 Hawai'i in
the quarterfinals, then avenged their earlier loss to No. 7 Stanford with a 3-2 win over the Cardinal in the semifinals before avenging another loss to No. 1 USC by defeating the Trojans, 4-1, in the championship dual.ย The Bruins improved to 21-6 all-time against the Rainbow Wahine, 27-2 all-time against the Cardinal, and to 18-24 all-time against the Trojans.
In the dual against the Rainbow Wahine, the Bruins earned their second 5-0 sweep of Hawai'i this week with graduate student Lexy Denaburg and sophomore Maggie Boyd clinching the win on court one over UH's Jaime Santer and Alana Embry, 21-9, 23-21.
In the dual against the Cardinal, UCLA led 2-1 with courts two and five posting straight-set victories. Graduate studentย Jaden Whitmarsh and senior Tessa Van Winkle (UCLA) def. Stanford's Chloe Hoffman and Kate Reilly in straight sets,ย 21-18, 21-17.
Senior Peri Brennan was named the tournament's Best Defender.
The Bruins return to action next week when they co-host The Battle for LA with their cross-town rivals, USC, UCLA will open the tournament at home with California at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 1 at Mapes Beach, followed by a dual at Noon against Cal Poly.
