No. 2 UCLA Advances to NCAA Semifinals

GULF SHORES, Ala.ย -- No. 2 UCLA (34-6) advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Championship with a 3-0 victory over eighth-ranked and seventh-seeded California (20-14) on Saturday morning at Gulfย Beach Place. The Bruins improved to 17-0ย all-time in the series against the Golden Bears.

Graduate student Devon Newberry and senior Peri Brennan put the Bruins up 1-0 with a straight-set win on court two overย Emma Donley and Kendall Peters, 21-17, 21-15. Newberry hit .750 (14 kills, three errors, 21 attempts) and added two blocks, one ace and one dig. Brennan hit a match-high .750 (nine kills, zero errors, 12 attempts) to go with seven digs and two aces.

UCLA's pair of redshirt freshman Kenzie Brower and junior Jessie Smith put the Bruins up 2-0 with a straight-set win on court three over Gia Fisher and Marilu Pally, 21-13, 21-17. Both Bruins hit an error-free match with Brower .643 (nine kills, zero errors, 14 attempts) and Smith hitting .636 (14 kills, zero errors, 22 attempts). Smith added 13 digs and one block while Brower added seven digs, five aces, and a block.

The Bruins' court one pair of graduate student Lexy Denaburg and sophomore Maggie Boyd posted a straight-set win over the Golden Bears' Sierra Caffo and Alexand Young-Gomez, 21-19, 21-18. Denaburg was simply amazing in the match, securing the final point with a kill, hitting .810 (17 kills, zero errors, 21 attempts) to go with sevenย digs, one block, and one ace. Boyd had a double-double of 12 kills and 16 digs to go with two aces.

Both Bruin pairs on courts four and five held a slight lead in the third set when the match was called.

UP NEXT: The Bruins will face No. 11 LSU in the semifinals of the NCAA Championship today at 2:30 p.m. CT/12:30 p.m. PT. The Tigers (27-11) advanced with a 3-2 upset win over No. 3 Stanford in the quarterfinals after upsetting No. 6ย TCUย in the opening round.ย UCLA already has two wins over LSU this season (5-0 and 4-1) and is 18-2 all-time in the series history, having won the last 10 duals.
