No. 20 Men's Tennis Defeats UC Irvine in Dual-Match Opener
January 17, 2025 | Men's Tennis
IRVINE, Calif. โ The 20th-ranked UCLA men's tennis team overcame an early deficit to beat UC Irvine 4-1 Friday at Anteater Tennis Stadium. The match, originally scheduled to be played at Los Angeles Tennis Center, represented the 2025 dual-match season opener for both programs.
The Bruins (1-0) were topped in doubles play, but responded by taking five of six singles first sets. Alexander Hoogmartens, Spencer Johnson, Rudy Quan and clincher Aadarsh Tripathi accounted for UCLA's points. The defending Big West champion Anteaters (0-1) got wins from their first and third doubles teams.
UCI struck first on Court 3, where Sohrob Amiryavari and Max Fardanesh bested Quan and Kaylan Bigun in the Bruins' debut, 6-4. Johnson and Emon van Loben Sels neared a victory on Court 2, but their hopes were dashed when Andy Nguyen and Noah Zamora clinched the point up top. The Anteaters held off the 10th-ranked combination of Hoogmartens and Tripathi 6-3.
Hoogmartens quickly rebounded in singles play, racing out to a 6-2 first-set win against Lawee Sherif on Court 5. It was more of the same in the second and the 6-2, 6-3 decision pulled UCLA level.
In a rematch of the ITA Southwest Regional Championships singles title match, No. 13 Johnson again got the better of No. 31 Zamora. Johnson prevailed 6-3, 6-4, giving the Bruins their first lead of the day. Six of his 11 victories this season have come opposite nationally-ranked foes.
ย
No. 50 Quan earned his first career dual-match win on Court 2, overcoming the defending Big West Freshman of the Year Nguyen 6-4, 6-3. Quan was playing his first singles tilt since September's ITA All-American Championships.
Finally, No. 93 Tripathi outlasted the hard-charging Ruining Huang 6-4, 7-6(4) on Court 6. The clinching victory was Tripathi's third of his career.
UCLA returns to action Monday, when it hosts San Diego in a top-20 matchup. The No. 16 Toreros, who host Oklahoma State Saturday, drop in to LATC for a 1 p.m. PT first serve on the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday.
