No. 1 UCLA Claims Victory over No. 25 Baylor at Coretta Scott King Classic

NEWARK, N.J. - The No. 1-ranked UCLA Women's Basketball team (18-0, 6-0 Big Ten) picked up its eighteenth win over No. 25-ranked Baylor at the Coretta Scott King Classic on Monday afternoon. The game was played at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., and finished with a final score of 72-57.
Junior Lauren Betts set the UCLA Women's Basketball single-game record for blocks in the win, swatting nine shots against the Bears (16-4, 6-1 Big 12). Betts was also the game's leading scorer with 24 points while also picking up nine rebounds.
Junior Gabriela Jaquez finished with her first double-double of the season, recording 11 points and 13 rebounds. Juniors Kiki Rice and Janiah Barker scored 15 and 11 points respectively, and Barker grabbed eight rebounds in the effort.
The Bruins began the game with a dominant performance on both ends of the floor in the first quarter. The team got out to a quick start, jumping out to a 17-4 lead in the first five minutes. Rice led the Bruins scoring in the quarter with seven points after the first ten minutes of play. Jaquez also started off hot, scoring six points on perfect shooting alongside four rebounds in the first frame.
Baylor began to find scoring success in the second quarter, but UCLA finished the first half up 37-29. The Bruins struggled with turning the ball over before the midgame break, allowing Baylor to score 19 points off of turnovers in the first half. Betts led the team in scoring in the second, picking up five points. Rice also scored on her only three-point attempt in the quarter to become the first Bruin in double figures. On the defensive end, Betts recorded four blocks before the media timeout in the second quarter and added six rebounds in the first half of the game.
The Bruins effectively scored and defended the ball to extend their lead to twelve points by the end of the third quarter. Betts led the quarter in overall scoring with six points while adding two blocks and a rebound to her stat line. Londynn Jones splashed a three-pointer while Rice, Barker, and Timea Gardiner also scored in the third frame. Barker also led the quarter in rebounding with four boards. The Bruins finished the third quarter up 52-40.
UCLA was dominant in the fourth quarter, finishing the game with a fifteen-point advantage. Betts scored nine points while picking up three blocks in the final frame of her record-setting performance. Rice and Jaquez both hit three-pointers in the fourth quarter, and Jaquez added four rebounds. Zania Socka-Nguemen hit a jumper in the final minute of the game to extend UCLA's lead to fifteen points and end the day's scoring.

The Bruins will travel to Piscataway, N.J., to face off against Rutgers at Jersey Mike's Arena on Thursday, Jan. 23. The game will tip off at 4 p.m. PST and will be broadcast on FS1.
