
No. 3 UCLA Takes Down No. 15 CSUN in Four Sets

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The No. 3 UCLA men's volleyball program earned a four set win over No. 15 CSUN on Friday night inside Premier American Credit Union Arena on the campus of CSUN. Set scores were 25-15, 23-25, 25-12, 25-17.
Cooper Robinson led the Bruins with 15 kills, while Zach Rama tallied 13 kills and Cameron Thorne added 12 kills to lead the Bruins. UCLA also tallied 12 service aces on the day, with Robinson recording six by himself, setting a new career-high.
Cameron Thorne was a force at the net for UCLA all night, tallying seven blocks, while the team finished with 24 total blocks on the night, a new season high.
As for the first set, Zach Rama served up an ace to give UCLA a 3-0 lead early on in the first set. Robinson followed with two quick kills to put the Bruins up 5-0.
Off a CSUN block the Bruins took a 18-9 lead heading into the final stretch of the first set. Cameron Thorne added another kill to the Bruin's tally, putting UCLA up 23-12. Thorne finished with four kills in the opening set.
A service error from CSUN then clinched the set for the Bruins, winning 25-15 and took a 1-0 lead heading into the second set. The Bruins hit .542 in the opening set, recording 16 kills and a pair of aces in the set.
In the second set the Bruins opened up a 2-0 advantage, courtesy of Ido David at the service line scoring his ace of the night. Thorne followed suit with a minster block to put UCLA up 3-0.
A few points later Rama recorded UCLA's third block of the evening, putting the Bruins up 8-3 partway through the second set. Rama put UCLA up 10-7 with his fifth kill of the evening.
CSUN used a mini run to tie the second set up at 11-11 forcing a UCLA timeout. CSUN continued to pile the pressure on the Bruins from the service line, and took a 14-12 lead before Thorne got the Bruins back on the board with a kill, and the Matadors held a 14-13 advantage.
After the two sides traded points, Thiago Zamprogno came up with a huge block to put the Bruins up 19-18, and Thorne followed with a block on the next ball to push the Bruins to a 20-18 lead and forced a CSUN timeout.
CSUN responded with five of the next seven points to take a 23-21 lead before Thorne recorded two points on his own with a kill followed by a block to tie the set up at 23-23. The Matadors then earned back-to-back points to take the second set, 25-23, tying the match at 1-1.
As for the third set the Matadors opened strongly, taking a 6-3 lead partway through the set. However, the Bruins clawed their way back and took a 11-9 lead courtesy of Andrew Rowan at the service line.
UCLA utilized a 9-0 run to take a 20-10 lead, with Cooper Robinson recording the final three points in the sequence, with the first and last coming from an ace.
The Bruins then took the third set 25-12 with UCLA recording aces on three of the final five points in the set.
In the fourth, the Bruins continued their momentum over from the third set and took a 10-6 lead midway through. Thorne recorded another kill shortly after, putting UCLA up 16-9, taking his kill tally to 11 on the evening.
Zamprogno collected UCLA's 24th block of the evening to put the Bruins up 20-14 before Robinson added his career-high fifth ace of the night to put the Bruins on top by seven, 23-16 before a CSUN service error ended the set as the Bruins earned the win in set four, 25-17, and won the match 3-1.
