No. 23 UCLA Swim & Dive Finishes 7th at Big Ten Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 23-ranked UCLA Swim and Dive program finished the final day at the Big Ten Championships on Saturday. The Bruins finished the meet in seventh place with 544 points.ย
On the week UCLA tallied 10 top-8 finishes and a total of 23 top-16 finishes throughout the week.
Additionally, Karolina Piechowicz and Claudia Yovanovich earned spots on the All-Big Ten Freshman team for their outstanding performances over the course of the week.
Ohio State took the team title with 1,313.5 points, while Indiana and Michigan rounded out the top three with 1,255.5 and 1,149.5 points, respectively.ย
Piechowicz and junior Eden Cheng earned the highest finishes of the week for UCLA as both placed fourth in an event, Piechowicz in the 100 breast and Cheng in the platform diving competition.

Saturday Finals
In UCLA's first event of the finals session, Murphy took 11th place in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:54.07. Chang took 16th in the event with a time of 1:56.57. In the C final, Lustria earned 20th place in 1:56.80, while Yovanovich finished in 22nd place at 1:58.44.

Harvey finished in 22nd place in the 100 freestyle C final with a time of 49.53.ย

Jih-Schiff finished in eighth place in the A final of the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:11.91, earning her second individual top-8 finish of the championships. Carlson took 13th in the B final of the event in 2:11.69.

MacEachern took 13th place in the B final of the 200 butterfly, recording a time of 1:58.36 while Kolessar finished in 24th place in the C final, touching at 2:00.60.

Eden Cheng recorded UCLA's first-ever top-5 individual finish on the diving boards when she took fourth in the platform competition. The junior earned the fourth place finish with a score of 313.75 points.ย

In the day's final event, the 400 freestyle relay, UCLA's group of Harvey, Bennetts, Arbuckle, and Jih-Schiff took eighth place with a time of 3:15.71.
Saturday Prelims
Rosie Murphy started out the first session of prelims of the day, qualifying for the 'B' final in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:54.55. Mia Chang also qualified for the B final in the event with a time of 1:55.82. Fay Lustria and Claudia Yovanovich finished in 23rd and 24th place, with times of 1:57.51 and 1:57.84 respectively.

Emma Harvey was UCLA's top finisher in the 100 freestyle prelim, finishing in 18th place with a time of 49.15. Josie Arbuckle finished in 27th place with a time of 49.73, and Morgan Hawes touched in 38th place at 50.33.

Ana Jih-Schiff finished in eighth place in the 200 breaststroke prelim, earning a spot in the A final with a time of 2:11.33. Eva Carlson finished in fifteenth place with a time of 2:12.11, and Sarah Bennetts earned 25th place with a time of 2:13.75. Emma Matous finished in 29th with a time of 2:14.17 and Karolina Piechowicz finished in 34th with a time of 2:14.84.

In the 200 butterfly prelim, Paige MacEachern earned 13th place with a time of 1:58.04. Ashley Kolessar finished 24th with a time of 1:59.51. Amy Zhang took 27th in 2:00.73, Mia Chang took 29th at 2:00.78, and Angela Quan finished in 39th at 2:03.74.

Day 3 Recap
On day three of the Big Ten Championships, the Bruins qualified 12 athletes for finals in their respective events, with UCLA logging four 'A' finals, six 'B' finals, and three 'C' finals.
Emma Harvey earned UCLA's first top-8 individual finish in Big Ten Championships history in the 100 fly to kick off the finals session. The transfer took seventh place in the 100 fly in 52.39.
On the diving boards, Eden Cheng earned UCLA's first Big Ten Championships top-15 showing, by placing 12th in the 3m diving competition. The junior took 12th after totaling a score of 293.70 over six dives.
Paige MacEachern followed suit with UCLA's second top-8 showing, taking eighth place in the 400 IM. The senior touched the wall in 4:11.07. Rosie Murphy also took part in the 'B' final in the event and finished 13th overall with a time of 4:11.36.
Later on in the 100 breast, Piechowicz earned the highest finish of any Bruin on the day, taking fourth in discipline in 59.27, setting a new UCLA school record in the process as just a freshman. Ana Jih-Schiff also took part in the 'A' final and took eighth place in 1:00.13.
Eva Carlson and Sarah Bennetts took part in the 'B' final in the 100 breast as well with Carlson taking 11th place in 1:00.38, and Bennetts touching the wall in 16th place in 1:00.78.
As for the 100 back, Harvey and Lustria both earned spots in the 'B' final and took 12th place and 14th place, respectively. Harvey took 12th in 52.39, while Lustria finished 14th in 53.18.
In the final event of the day, the 400 medley relay, the Bruins took sixth place in the event. The group of Lustria, Piechowicz, Harvey and Jih-Schiff finished in 3:33.86, finishing just behind Minnesota in fifth place.
Day 1 & 2 Recap
On day one of the championships the UCLA 200 medley relay squad kicked off UCLA's first trip to the Big Ten Championships in strong fashion, taking sixth place in the 14-team field. The quartet of Fay Lustria, Eva Carlson, Emma Harvey and Ana Jih-Schiff combined to finish in 1.35.80, setting a new school record and hitting the NCAA 'A' cut to automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships in the event.
The Bruins followed Thursday's strong relay result with another school-record performance in the third relay of the week, the 200 free relay. The quartet of Harvey, Jih-Schiff, Bennetts and Yovanovich combined to finish in 1:28.85, touching the wall in seventh and in a new school record time.
In the morning on day two, three Bruins qualified for the 'B' final in the 200 IM. The trio of Rosie Murphy, Jih-Schiff and Paige MacEachern all earned second swims by finishing in 10th, 12th, and 13th overall in the prelims session.
In the finals session Murphy placed 10th overall, securing the Bruins first ever individual top-10 finish at the Big Ten Championships in 1:56.66. MacEachern took third in the 'B' final and 11th overall in 1:57.00 while Jih-Schiff finished in 14th overall, touching the wall in 1:57.63.
Additionally, throughout the morning, the Bruins took part in the 500 free, 50 free, and the 1m diving competition. ย Ashley Kolessar paced the Bruins and finished in 25th in the 500 free with a time of 4:46.05, while Yovanovich was the best finisher in the 50 free for UCLA, taking 28th in 22.71. As for the 1m diving competition, four Bruins took part, with Eden Cheng finishing as the highest-placed Bruin in 29th place with a score of 240.50.
