UCLA Wins Big Ten Championship to Complete Conference Sweep
March 22, 2025 | Gymnastics
Ann Arbor, Mich. – Top-seeded and fifth-ranked UCLA swept through the Big Ten in its first year in the conference, scoring 198.450 at the Big Ten Gymnastics Championships to win its first Big Ten title and 21st conference title. The Bruin gymnasts, who won the regular season title with a 9-0 conference record, become the first UCLA team ever to win both the regular season and conference championship titles in the Big Ten.
UCLA's score of 198.450 is the highest team score in Big Ten Championship history and the Bruins' fourth-highest score in school history. The Bruins (24-3) totaled 18 scores of 9.900 or higher and counted just two scores lower than 9.850 in the entire meet.
In addition to the team championship, three Bruins won individual titles. Chae Campbell captured the all-around crown with a career-high-tying score of 39.725. Jordan Chiles and Brooklyn Moors each scored a perfect 10.0 on floor exercise to share the title, while Ciena Alipio also scored a perfect 10.0 to tie for first on beam. The perfect 10s for Moors and Alipio were the first of their career, and Chiles' 10 was her third this season and 11th of her career. The Bruins made history by becoming the first Big Ten team with three different perfect 10 scorers in the same meet.
The R.C. Rothman UCLA Head Gymnastics Coach Janelle McDonald was voted the Big Ten Coach of the Year, the first conference head coach honor of her career.
Michigan State led for the first three rotations with big team scores of 49.500 on beam in the first rotation, 49.600 on floor in rotation two and 49.575 on vault in rotation three. But UCLA stayed in striking distance after starting the meet with a season-high-tying 49.350 on vault and then having all six competitors score 9.900 or higher on uneven bars, for a team total of 49.550. A school record-tying 49.750 on balance beam brought the Bruins to within 0.025 of the Spartans heading into the last rotation, and, like they did earlier in the season, they dropped a 49.800 on floor exercise to secure the come-from-behind victory. Michigan State finished in second place with a score of 198.150. Minnesota was third with 197.425, and Michigan placed fourth with 197.325.
